The digital news company Mic has laid off most of its staff, a spokesperson for the company confirmed.The layoffs were first reported Thursday by Recode. It is not yet clear exactly how many employees were affected. Mic declined to comment beyond confirming the Recode report.The company was founded in 2011, and for the past several years has branded itself as a news website geared toward millennials.Mic Publisher Cory Haik also resigned Thursday. In a note to staff that was obtained by CNN Business, Haik called journalism a "tough business.""Our business models are unsettled, and the macro forces at play are all going through their own states of unrest," she wrote. "If anyone tells you they have it figured out, a special plan to save us all, or that it's all due to a singular fault, know that is categorically false. Digiday reported in April that traffic to Mic's website had been plunging.The article also noted that Mic was very reliant on Facebook, citing statistics that showed views on the social media site fell to 11 million views in March compared to 192 million about a year earlier.Still, company executives pushed back on some reports that characterized the situation at Mic as particularly dire. When the Columbia Journalism Review reported in September that the company's board discussed a possible shutdown, Altchek called the report "categorically false."Emily Singer, a senior political reporter at Mic, tweeted Thursday that she was leaving the company."I'm so proud of what we've accomplished here," Singer wrote.Kerry Lauerman, Mic's executive news director, tweeted about the "gutting experience" Thursday."But only love for the extremely resilient and open-hearted team of Mic editors, producers, writers and shooters I had the great honor of working with," he added. The confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barrett are officially scheduled to begin October 12 at 9 a.m.The head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Lindsey Graham, announced this start date in the days following Barrett’s confirmation. However, there were questions after three Republicans on the committee reported they tested positive for the coronavirus in the last few days.They are Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Mike Lee of Utah.After a day of opening statements from committee members and Barrett herself, questioning of the nominee will begin October 13. The Hill is reporting Barrett is expected to testify in person at the hearing.The committee vote on moving Barrett’s nomination to the full senate could be as early as October 22.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said if the hearings go forward, Graham should require coronavirus testing for senators and their staffs. He suggested mandatory testing every day of the hearing.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over the weekend announced the full senate will not return until October 19, mentioning that hearings already this year have included lawmakers participating remotely.No word from Graham if there will be increased safety protocols for the committee or if any of the senators will participate remotely.Also, Senator Graham tweeted Monday morning he had spoken with President Donald Trump. “He sounds terrific -- very engaged and ready to get back to work! The Cheektowaga, New York mother whose battle with breast cancer captured the hearts of many Western New Yorkers has died. Libby Gaymon, 43, passed away Tuesday. She had faced breast cancer twice in less than two years.In May, Libby's daughter Alexis asked her mom to be her date to the senior prom at McKinley High School in Buffalo. The surprise promposal was a well-coordinated effort between Alexis, her family and McKinley administrators. Alexis wanted to bring her mother because Libby didn't get to go to the prom when she was in school.On prom night, dozens of supporters of Libby packed the Gaymons' front lawn, some spilling onto the sidewalk and neighboring lawns to cheer on the mother-daughter duo.McKinley High School donated a limousine, while other community members offered free wig services, makeup application and corsage supply to make the night even more special.Most recently, Gaymon tried an experimental immunotherapy treatment at Roswell Park. Immunotherapy helps the body’s immune system attack cancer cells. The Broward County Sheriff's deputy who was assigned to be the school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas High School during last week's massacre that left 17 dead resigned this morning after being suspended without pay, Sheriff Scott Israel announced on Thursday. Israel said that Deputy Scot Peterson was outside of the building during the time of the shooting. According to Israel, video evidence suggested that Peterson remained outside for four minutes.
