SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A previously-deported sex offender who tried to enter the U.S. illegally was arrested Sunday by Border Patrol agents.On July 5 around 1:30 a.m., agents patrolling the U.S./Mexico border near Tecate saw three people enter the U.S. illegally, the agency said.All three men were arrested and, after fingerprinting all three, a records check revealed that one of the men, a 33-year-old Mexican national, had been convicted for sex crimes against a child.According to the agency, the man had been convicted in 2006 of lewd acts upon a child and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was removed from the U.S. in 2014.The man is currently being held in federal custody pending charges for felony illegal re-entry after deportation, Border Patrol says. 771
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A motorist was injured Wednesday night after his motorcycle collided with a trash truck in Serra Mesa.According to San Diego Police, the crash happened around 6:13 p.m at Larkdale Avenue and Murray Ridge Road.The circumstances surrounding the crash are still unclear, but officers say that, following the crash, the motorcyclist was pinned under the truck.After the man was freed, he was taken to the hospital with major injuries to his legs.His condition is unclear at this time. 508
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report is looking into why there is a shortage of homes for sale around the country. According to the report by NerdWallet, in October of 2017, the US had a 3.9-month supply of existing homes for resale, meaning at that pace, it would have taken 3.9 months to sell all the homes on the market. According to NerdWallet, a supply under six months places home buyers at a disadvantage. The report identifies six reasons why the housing supply is so low. 1. Boomers aren’t movingOver three-fourths of baby boomers own their own homes, according to the report, meaning millennials don’t have enough homes available to buy. The report also found that rising home prices force baby boomers to stay put because they don’t have the cash to downsize. RELATED: California gas tax set to increase July 12. Landlords won’t sellNerdWallet says millions of single-family homes were converted to rentals after the foreclosure crisis. In 2017, renters made up 36 percent of households. A greater demand for homes coupled with less supply means values rise while rents are rising faster than home prices. 3. Low mortgage rates The report points out that interest rates on outstanding mortgages averaged about 3.8 percent over the last three years. As mortgage rates rise, fewer people are interested in selling and getting into new mortgages. 4. Entry-level homes ignored by buildersIn the first nine months of 2017, nearly 500,000 newly-built homes were sold of which 55 percent sold for 0,000 or more. Regulations add costThe report points out the homebuilders say environmental protection, infrastructure fees and rules that specify lot sizes all add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of building every single home. Owners want a restricted supplyFinally, the report found that local zoning and land-use regulations are enacted by officials elected by the people. The report says those officials are only responding to constituents who want a limit on the number of homes that can be built in a neighborhood. Elected officials can also set a minimum square footage for homes, further limiting supply. “There are regulations that are more about the neighbors’ sensibilities than they are about the safety of the people living in the houses,” says Miriam Axel-Lute, associate director of the National Housing Institute. “It’s neighbors who want their property values to go up, in most cases, who are insistent upon some excess safety design standards or minimum lot sizes or other things,” Lute says. “They either want their property values to go up or they don’t want, quote, ‘the wrong sort of people’ in their neighborhoods. This is the pressure behind a lot of the most damaging regulations out there.” 3097
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home.The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon.After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon.When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who is accused of falling asleep drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a Rancho Bernardo fire that killed his two children in 2017, has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison.Henry Lopez was convicted last September of involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and recklessly starting the fire that killed 7-year-old Isabella and 10-year-old Cristos.Wednesday, victim impact statements were read aloud — including a statement by Lopez — before the judge sentenced Lopez to 12 years and eight months behind bars.“[The] defendant has completely and utterly failed to accept the consequences of his actions. These horrible deaths were completely avoidable. The defendants actions caused a lot of pain. Prosecutors say Lopez fell asleep with a lit cigarette that likely made contact with a defective cell phone, sparking the blaze. Lopez woke up to find his home on fire and tried to escape but passed out from the smoke, fire investigators said.His two children died in the blaze. Investigators say Cristos was burned to death and Isabella passed out from smoke inhalation and never woke up.Throughout the sentencing hearing Wednesday, heated moments erupted from Lopez's ex-wife and even one of the jurors."I told you if you continued on this path of reckless behavior something bad was going to happen.
