SAN DIEGO — An aging shopping center right across from one of San Diego's most luxurious could be in for a major revitalization project. The 31-year-old Costa Verde shopping center is right across from the modern Westfield UTC. The center, at the corner of Genesee and Nobel, serves the community with grocery stores, places to eat, exercise, and get gas and dry cleaning. However, it has several vacancies and there are always empty parking spaces. Now, it appears to be in for a major overhaul that would help it fit right in with Westfield UTC. Owner Regency Centers is moving toward tearing down the entire mall, except for the McDonalds and gas station/car wash on the southwest end. It would then rebuild the retail portion, with the same community serving stores. But, this time, it would add a 200-room business hotel, and 400,000 square-feet of biotech office space, partnering with Alexandria Real Estate."The neighborhood is the most dynamic neighborhood, not only in San Diego County, not only in Southern California, not even on the west coast," said John Murphy, who is leading the project for Regency Centers. "It is one of the most dynamic pieces of property in the country."The San Diego Planning Commission unanimously recommended the project for approval Thursday. It will next go before the City Council, likely in October. If all goes as planned, ground could break in 2021, with the retail portion ready by the holidays of 2023. 1458

SAN DIEGO - Was math your worst subject in school? You can still find ways to help your children through the dreaded homework.Use measuring and fraction skills when you bake or cook. That will help children learn the relevance of math in everyday life, according to Janeen Lewis, a teacher and writer at San Diego Family Magazine.Research fun careers that use math. Architects, astronauts, fashion designers and forensic analysts rely on math. Do you have teens or tweens? Lewis recommends the book Careers: The Graphic Guide to Finding the Perfect Job for You.Plan a trip together and calculate the miles you will travel at a designated speed to determine how long it will take you to get there.Give your child an allowance he or she has to manage. Together, you can both decide how much he or she will save and spend.Keep math resources on hand. SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico. At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. 975

SAN DIEGO — Residents all over San Diego County Wednesday night reported seeing mysterious lights hovering in the sky. Scripps station KGTV in San Diego received several calls from residents throughout the county who reported seeing the lights in the western sky between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. local timeReports came in from Blossom Valley, La Jolla, Del Mar and El Cajon.Local officials have not yet responded to reporters' questions about the mysterious lights.PHOTOS: Mysterious lights hover over San DiegoPhotos sent in by viewers appear to show several yellow objects floating together in the sky. One viewer, Dani Grady, said the lights faded in, then hovered for about 10 minutes mostly in a linear formation and sometimes in a Z formation. Roughly 20 minutes after the objects disappeared into the night, Grady says she heard what sounded like helicopters flying over the ocean into the darkness with only a small, red light.   976

SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak. This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation. The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said. But the cost is now coming under scrutiny. From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit. The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million. Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely. The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied. In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. The statement added comparing hotel rate does not account for the full cost of supportive services it provides at the shelter. 2064
