SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friday, the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) issued an apology to the LGBTQ community for recognizing homosexuality as a mental disorder for decades.The apology comes during pride month and on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York City.“Regrettably some of that era’s understanding of homosexuality and gender identity can be attributed to the American psychoanalytic establishment,” said APsaA president, Dr. Lee Jaffe in a statement. “It is long past time to recognize and apologize for our role in the discrimination and trauma caused by our profession.”At the kick off of APsaA’s 109th Annual Meeting at the San Diego Intercontinental Hotel, Jaffe spoke to a room filled with psychoanalysts saying in part, “For many years we viewed homosexuality as an illness, and we denied opportunities for learning in our training programs to LGBTQ professionals unless they concealed their sexuality. Our views led to discrimination both internally and in society at large.”Over the last several decades, APsaA has pushed for LGBTQ equality, even becoming the first major mental health organization to support marriage equality. The group has also lobbied to end conversion therapy and to lift the transgender military ban.“While APsaA is now proud to be advocating for sexual and gender diversity, we all know that hearing the words ‘we are sorry’ is important to healing past trauma,” said Jaffe.Dr. Justin Shubert who is co-chair on APsaA’s Committee on Gender and Sexuality was in attendance of the annual meeting and says he hopes the words Friday are a step in the right direction.“It’s just a few words but they really mean a lot I think,” said Shubert. "I feel that this is a statement that where we’re saying not only we’re sorry, but we welcome LGBT people to treatment and now the focus is just about helping people feel authentic about who they are." 1914

According to the San Diego Brewer's Guild, the region is home to more than 130 craft breweries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For comic, movie, and science-fiction fanatics, getting to Comic-Con is a dream come true.For one San Diego military family, it was extra special because experiencing it as a family was never guaranteed. "I actually brought Mason and Annabelle when he was on deployment to Syria, and he was kind of bummed he wasn't coming," said Lindsey Stacy, referring to her husband Kenton.It was on that deployment when Kenton, a Navy EOD Tech, was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was given just a two percent chance of survival but ultimately overcame the odds. "He's just made so many miraculous recoveries, and I'm praying there's more to come," said Lindsey.While Kenton's story has inspired thousands around the world, few know of his love for all things cartoons and superheroes. Their firstborn Logan was named after X-Men's Wolverine. "I always said he's this big tough guy but he's like a comic book and Star Wars nerd underneath!"So Lindsey put out the call for help to bring Kenton to Comic-Con."People were just so willing to help make this dream come true for Kenton," she said. Both Comic-Con International and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund stepped up to provide the family and Kenton's caregivers with four-day badges. The convention says it's dedicated to serving people of all abilities; providing a rest area, loaning out wheelchairs, and providing volunteer sign language interpreters for deaf guests. "Things are different now, and we can't be out as long, and we just tailor it to his needs, but we're just so happy to be here and have him home with us and be able to actually just reintegrate our lives back together again," said Lindsey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time since his arrest, the La Jolla restaurant owner charged with rape is speaking publicly. Daniel Dorado is testifying in his defense.Eight women have come forward saying Dorado drugged and sexually assaulted them over the course of a decade. The owner of the Voce del Mar restaurant in Birdrock faces 35 felony charges for allegedly raping women after drugging their drinks. "She was interested in being alone with me," said Dorado. "She initiated the physical contact."Prosecutors say in at least two of the cases, a sexual relationship occurred after the women got visibly sick and threw up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Disney officials say they do not believe Disneyland or California Adventure parks will reopen before 2021.During an earnings call on Thursday, Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said the Anaheim theme park will likely remain close through the end of the fiscal first quarter, which ends in late December."While some of our parks are open with limited capacity, we currently anticipate Disneyland resort will remain closed at least through the end of the fiscal first quarter," McCarthy said.RELATED: San Diego County businesses sue amid rollback in reopening restrictionsMcCarthy added that the company does not have any indication of how long restrictions on theme parks will last.California introduced reopening guidelines for small and large theme parks in October. Small theme parks with a capacity of less than 15,000 visitors can reopen in the state's moderate (orange) tier while large parks like Disneyland can reopen in the minimal (yellow) tier.Orange County is currently in the red tier and would need to post two weeks of orange tier data to move forward. The county would need to do the same to move into the yellow tier.
