VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl while she rode in an ambulance. The California Highway Patrol launched an investigation into the Feb. 21, 2017 incident involving 34-year-old David Carpio, a private ambulance company employee. The girl was being transported to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside when Carpio assaulted her and asked for her Snapchat information to start a relationship with her, investigators said. A CHP investigator posing as the girl communicated with Carpio through social media and text messages over several months, during which time officials gained damaging information. Other alleged female victims also came forward with claims against Carpio, saying he had sexually assaulted them when he was their neighbor. One of the women was 16 years old at the time of the encounter. Carpio pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges and was sentenced Thursday for sexual penetration of a minor and sexual battery. 1022

(KGTV) — A pregnant mother who fell sleep at the wheel early Saturday morning crashed into a Vista building, causing an hours-long gas leak.San Diego Sheriff's deputies say the crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on South Santa Fe Ave., near Civic Center Dr., at a Battery World store.A family of five was in the SUV that crashed after the driver, identified as a 30-year-old pregnant mother by deputies, told deputies she fell asleep before she lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone pole, and crashed into the building.A 40-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and a 9-month-old girl were in the SUV at the time of the crash. The driver sustained a bruise to her forehead. No one was seriously injured, deputies said. The family was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.The crash caused a gas leak in the damaged building. SDG&E crews have since fixed the leak. (CNS) - The Vista Unified School District fully reopened its schools Tuesday morning, becoming one of the first in the region to do so, even as San Diego County appears poised to slip back toward more restrictive COVID-19 tiers as infections surge.The district, which has 29 elementary, middle and high schools, eschewed the more cautious measures some other school districts are taking, moving into its "Phase 3" reopening plan. The plan, "Vista Classic" allows every school in the district to reopen at full capacity.
