President Donald Trump's televised meeting Wednesday with lawmakers on gun control "made for great TV," a National Rifle Association spokesperson told CNN -- but the group was not entertained by the President's apparent sharp turn on policy."While today's meeting made for great TV, the gun-control proposals discussed would make for bad policy that would not keep our children safe," NRA public affairs director Jennifer Baker said. "Instead of punishing law-abiding gun owners for the acts of a deranged lunatic, our leaders should pass meaningful reforms that would actually prevent future tragedies."Lawmakers should focus on "fixing the broken mental health system, strengthening background checks to ensure the records of people who are prohibited from possessing firearms are in the (National Instant Criminal Background Check) system, securing our schools and preventing the dangerously mentally ill from accessing firearms," Baker added.During the meeting, Trump insisted that he is "a fan of the NRA," but he chided Republicans for being "afraid" of the gun lobby. Meanwhile, he expressed openness to measures that the NRA and some Republicans oppose, including raising the age limit to purchase firearms to 21 from 18. The President's remarks left Republicans visibly shell-shocked and Democrats giddy.Trump was skeptical that major gun policy changes would present a political risk, saying it would be "so easy" to harness the 60 votes needed to avert a filibuster in the Senate. And he pointedly dismissed the power of the NRA to derail the effort, telling lawmakers in the room, "They have great power over you people, they have less power over me.""Some of you people are petrified of the NRA," Trump added. "You can't be petrified." 1756

President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, had his White House security clearance restored Wednesday, a person familiar with the matter said, after months of uncertainty stemming in part from his role in the ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.Kushner was stripped of his interim clearance in February amid an overhaul of procedures governing access to the nation's most sensitive secrets following the resignation of Rob Porter, the President's staff secretary, who had been allowed to remain in his post for months despite allegations of spouse abuse. The Mueller probe has also hung over Kushner's status in the White House, in part because some of the matters under investigation relate to his role during the campaign and the transition, including contacts with Russians, as well as events that occurred in the early months of the Trump presidency, such as the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. In April, Kushner met with Mueller's investigators for a second time and answered questions for seven hours, according to his attorney, Abbe Lowell. He had previously sat for an interview last November that was largely focused on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who soon after pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements to the FBI.White House officials have blamed the delay in Kushner receiving his security clearance on administrative backlogs normal to a new administration, as well as the complicated nature of his application. But Kushner's troubles were compounded at least in part because his initial security clearance application didn't list dozens of foreign contacts that he later included in updated submissions to the FBI.Kushner's initial SF-86 form did not mention any foreign contacts, though he quickly supplemented it to indicate that he would provide that information. He updated the form in the spring, listing about 100 contacts, but did not mention the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting he attended with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, Donald Trump Jr., and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Kushner updated the SF-86 forms once more in June to include that meeting. 2191

Republican U.S. Sen. David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff will face off in a Jan. 5 runoff in Georgia for Perdue’s Senate seat. Libertarian candidate Shane Hazel was able to get enough votes to prevent either candidate from clearing the 50% threshold needed for an outright win. The contest has already seen huge spending from outside groups on both sides and millions of dollars more are expected to pour into the state ahead of the runoff. Perdue is a close ally of President Donald Trump. The race has been characterized by sharp attack ads but relatively moderate political positions.Coupled with another runoff in Georgia in a special election, the two Senate races could decide which parties have control of the US Senate. 737

Protests broke out in Atlanta early Saturday, hours after at least one Atlanta Police officer shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, 27, outside a Wendy’s late Friday. In the wake of Friday's shooting, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced the resignation of Police Chief Erika Shields. "It has become abundantly clear that over the last couple weeks in Atlanta is that while we have a police force full of men and women who work alongside our communities with honor respect and dignity," Bottoms said, "there has been a disconnect with what our expectations are, and should be as it relates to interactions with our officers and the communities in which they are entrusted to protect."Body worn or dash cam video of the incident was released to the public late Saturday. Video circulating on social media reportedly of the incident shows a man grabbing a stun gun from police during a struggle and running from officers. The video shows officers then shooting Brooks as he tried to flee.“The (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) is aware that there is video posted on social media captured by witnesses in this incident. We are reviewing the video & the early investigative information in this case. We’ll provide an update as soon as we can,” the agency said Saturday morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test.Police then claimed Brooks struggled with officers during the arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers then fired a Taser at Brooks.Eyewitnesses told investigators that Brooks then struggled with officers over the Taser, and that’s when at least one officer shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery.Atlanta has been the site of a number of large protests in recent weeks in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Floyd died on Memorial Day in police custody after a Minneapolis police officer held a knee against his neck for nearly nine minutes. The NAACP reacted to Saturday's shooting via Twitter. "Stop urging the black community to be patient as our people are being gunned down by those sworn to 'protect and serve.' Sweeping police reform is no longer a consideration," the NAACP said in a statement. 2349

Price gouging continues to be a problem for Amazon shoppers, according to the U.S Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).A consumer watchdog says the price spikes are not based on normal supply and demand.“People are really struggling right now, and the last thing that they need to worry about is going to the store or going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices,” said Grace Brombach, a consumer watchdog associate with U.S. PIRG.U.S. PIRG found a wide range of products can cost two to 14 times more. For example, disinfecting wipes cost nearly on amazon, compared to about at other stores. They suggest making sure you know the average price and shopping around. As part of the HEROES Act, Congress passed price gouging legislation. Some states have bills to further define emergency products to fight price spikes. Still, U.S. PIRG expects this problem to continue.“We see situations like this come up in hurricanes and tornadoes, when people need to buy space heaters and electric lamps,” said Brombach. “And so, this will continue to be a problem going into the future if we don't address this issue now.”Early on in the pandemic, Amazon removed thousands of listings and third party sellers from its website for suspected price gouging. In August, Amazon said it was working to maintain its “fair pricing policy” while taking reasonable increases into account. 1439
