More than 14,000 firefighters are battling those fires and about two dozen others around California.The fire danger also is high in Southern California, where new fires were burning in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks.His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started.The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. He says there was no rehearsal and you can even see people running up late in his video.“However, that’s exact the reason why it’s beautiful,” said Liu. “People showed up only because people care. Me and bunch of other photographers showed up because we want to help document the moment.”Elijah McClain caseThere’s been renewed interest in the Elijah McClain case after nationwide protests put a spotlight on past instances of police use of force across the country.McClain died on Aug. 24, 2019, shortly after being arrested by officers with the Aurora Police Department.KMGH reports that McClain was walking home after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store when a bystander called 911 to report “a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.” Family says McClain wore the mask because he was anemic and got cold easily.When officers tracked McClain down, police say he began “resisting.” Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state."Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. United will continue to lead on testing, while at the same time exploring new solutions that contribute to the safest travel experience possible."United said Premise Health is administering the rapid testing pilot program.Travelers flying into the UK still face a mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to the US Embassy in the United Kingdom. 1426
