NANTONG, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The first Sino-American Dialogue on Rule of Law and Human Rights ended Sunday in Nantong, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province. The two-day symposium was jointly organized by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD) and National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) of the United States. Representatives from China and the United States exchanged views on topics of government transparency, pretrial detention, labor disputes and lawyers' role. Prof. Jerome Cohen of the New York University School of Law said the symposium was "a good exchange" and the U.S. delegation learned more about China. "We talked about some sensitive issues with people we didn't know before. This is a big good start," Cohen told Xinhua. "The dialogue is a sign of increasing exchanges between non-governmental organizations," Huang Mengfu, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and CFHRD chairman, addressed the opening ceremony on Saturday. The symposium attracted more than 30 Chinese and U.S. law professionals and scholars.
MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that "one country, two systems" had been successfully implemented in both Hong Kong and Macao since their return to the motherland. "The two special administrative regions have accumulated rich experience in the regard, and can learn from each other and make progress together," said the president when meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government. Hu and Tsang arrived here Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Macao SAR. He was also confident that the Hong Kong SAR government and people of various sectors will also continue to work hard together to create a good social environment of harmony and stability. Tsang thanked the president for the encouragement and support given to him and Hong Kong, pledging that the HKSAR government will do its utmost to sustain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's central government launched 20 venture capital funds with seven local governments on Friday to provide investment in the country's high-tech sectors, the top economic planner said in a statement on its web site. The investment would go to high-tech sectors including the electronic and information sector, biological and pharmaceutical industry, new energy sector and projects related to energy conservation and environmental protection, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said. The 20 funds would collect about nine billion yuan (1.31 billion U.S. dollars), of which, one billion yuan was invested by the central government, 1.2 billion yuan by local governments and the rest from private investment, the NDRC said. The funds were aimed to direct capital into new industries and competitive high-tech enterprises to push forward self-innovation, it said. The NDRC and the Ministry of Finance signed the agreement with 7 local governments of Beijing, Jilin, Shanghai, Anhui, Hunan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.
CHANGSHA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun has called on publicity departments and media organizations to "vigorously" disseminate the core values of socialist China and inspire the public to achieve the Party's development goals. Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said during his inspection tour to Hunan Province that China's achievements in the reform and opening up and modernization cause should be well presented, as well as the country's successful experience in dealing with the financial crisis. Li's five-day tour ended Wednesday, during which he urged publicity departments and news media to "spread China's practices in keeping economic development steady and relatively fast amid the international financial crisis."
