Two gun shops in Southwest Florida are offering free gun training for teachers in response to the Parkland shooting.A free class at North Fort Myers Guns is designed to educate teachers about guns so they can protect themselves and others.A new state law allows schools districts the option to arm teachers under certain conditions.  They would be required to go through 144 hours of training and an evaluation process with law enforcement.Robert Lewis, the owner of North Fort Myers Guns, said the training he is offering will give teachers a jump start on how to use a gun.Lewis said it's a two-hour class where teachers can learn the basics and then they will go to a local gun range a few days later to practice firing a gun."My trainer takes you out to his private range in North Fort Myers. You will shoot any number of weapons you want. He makes it a true learning experience," Lewis said.The training is normally , but Lewis said he's offering it for free for teachers because he believes arming teachers will help protect kids in school.Two teachers have already signed up for Tuesday's training class. Lewis said depending on how many teachers sign up, he will hold a class at least once a month.Fowler Firearms in Ft. Myers, Florida is offering a similar service.After receiving a local donation, the manager John Dezendorf is offering the first five local certified teachers who sign up a brand new firearm and free platinum memberships.The membership includes free range time and gun rentals for a year.Dezendorf said whether the teachers are required to train through the state or county, his training services will give them the extra practice they need."The number one thing is to keep children safe and the only things to keep kids safe is to have people around them that are able to protect them. Two hundred million dollars – that's how much money Monat Global says it made selling hair care products in 2017 through multi-level marketing.YouTube videos show the family behind Monat in mansions and driving fancy cars — but an ongoing class action lawsuit claims the company is nothing more than a pyramid scheme.Three recently filed class action lawsuits accuse Monat of fraud and deception."An inherent design and/or manufacturing defect in Monat hair care products causes significant hair loss and scalp irritation to many consumers," one lawsuit alleges."I'm devastated with what my hair looks like right now," said Heather Fox, a Monat customer in Phoenix."I had to cut off my hair," said Monat Market Partner Erin Ostby.Both women say Monat did them more damage than good."My dad used to always say I was like Samson from the Bible – I got my power from my hair. So it was really upsetting and I couldn't do that to someone else," said Ostby, who recently stopped selling Monat.CLICK TO SEE THE ORIGINAL COMPLAINTSThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received and is in the process of assessing 187 adverse event reports related to Monat products. It's not going to cause this kind of reaction," Monat Spokesperson Gene Grabowski said in a phone interview.But the company's repeated response to BBB complaints states that, "although Monat's ingredients are naturally-based, safe, pure and sustainable, we understand that some may experience a reaction and should discontinue use."The class action lawsuits claim the products use numerous "harsh chemicals" and "known human allergens."  One controversial ingredient the suit highlights is Capixyl – containing red clover – which some say should be on a warning label."Yes, there should be a warning label, but only if the amount was higher," Grabowski said.The University of Maryland Medical Center says women with a history of breast cancer should avoid red clover due to its estrogen-like effects in the body. It also says red clover may interfere with the liver's ability to process some drugs."The amount of red clover used (red clover extract) is so small that it would have no effect," said Grabowski.According to the FDA, cosmetic companies are responsible for ensuring the safety of their own products, which in most cases don't require government approval before they go on the market."We do tests before we send them to market and we know they're safe," said Grabowski. "I mean, those aren't clinical tests."Monat's website shows the clinical tests they did utilized one active ingredient per study.As the class action lawsuits were recently filed, Monat has not yet responded to the claims in court.    3161

TROY, Mich. — A man from Warren who spent months fighting COVID-19 was finally released from the hospital.Zahid Raza was released Friday from Beaumont Hospital, where he'd been fighting COVID-19 since March.He said he still has lasting effects like wheezing, and because of the virus, he's also having problems with his kidneys.Zahid went into Beaumont Hospital in Troy on March 30 because he couldn't breathe. He said one of his last memories was hearing medical staff say they were using the last available ventilator on him.He spent the next several weeks in a coma — even his 65th birthday. U.S. employers added a substantial 4.8 million jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1%, as the job market improved for a second straight month yet remained far short of regaining the colossal losses it suffered this spring. The nation has now recovered roughly one-third of the 22 million jobs it lost to the pandemic recession.The monthly job report coincided with the Department of Labor's weekly report on unemployment claims, which indicated that 1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending June 27. That brings a 15-week total to about 47.9 million claims.Thursday's figures were down about 60,000 from last week's unemployment filings. It marked the fourth straight week where unemployment claims have hovered at about 1.5 million.Weekly claims for unemployment have been falling for about four straight months after peaking at about 6 million a week in late March. But weekly unemployment claims remain historically high.Prior to the pandemic, the record high for weekly unemployment claims came in 2006, when 665,000 people filed for unemployment. The Department of Labor has been tracking the statistics since 1967.Economists often use weekly unemployment claims as a reliable tool when predicting unemployment. However, some surveys indicate that initial weekly claims may be underestimating the amount of those unemployed.At least one survey from the Economic Policy Institute found that millions of Americans gave up trying to seek benefits or didn't even start the process due to states' overwhelmed and antiquated unemployment systems.The new figures also come weeks before increased unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire later this month.While unemployment remains historically high, the stock market has improved drastically in recent months.
