ENGLEWOOD, Colo -- Englewood School District confirmed it is investigating a "fight club" after a video on social media from one of its middle schools made its way into the public light. Scripps station KMGH in Denver received a video of two students at Englewood Middle School fighting, and that parent is concerned her child might be next. According to that parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, there are "fight club social media pages" with videos from fights at Englewood Middle School. One of those videos was recorded on April 5. The video shows one student assaulting another, according to officials at Englewood Schools. The district said the student responsible is now facing disciplinary and legal action. Englewood Police Department sent a statement that one girl was issued a summons for assault. KMGH was not able to find the social media pages, but the district confirmed it is aware of the social media groups and are trying to find those who are responsible for those pages to hold them accountable. The mother who contacted KMGH said through text that those social media pages spread that her child may be the next target and she's "petrified to send her back to school." The district said it will be increasing its security presence at the Englewood Campus as a result.  1349

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of teachers showed up Thursday night at the Escondido Union School board meeting, demanding better pay and benefits.The teachers are in the middle of a prolonged contract negotiation with the district.According to the superintendent, Luis Rankins-Ibarra, the district has offered a 3.37% retroactive raise for last year, when the teachers were working without a contract. Teachers have agreed to that, but are not satisfied with the 2.41% raise offered for the coming school year.“The surrounding districts have much better salary and benefits packages than ours,” said Romero Maratea, a middle school teacher and the president of the teacher’s union.The union is seeking a 2.7% cost of living adjustment (COLA) for next year. They are also asking for clarification on the district’s proposed 0.5% increase to their benefits, saying they do not know the underlying number it applies to.One of the teacher negotiators addressed the board on this topic.“Count the variables. So half a percent of an unknown quantity added to another undefined amount is what you are offering.”Another frustrated teacher commented, “are you trying to hide something? it sure seems like it.”A spokesperson for the district declined access to interview district officials.In a prepared statement from Superintendent Rankins-Ibarra, he wrote, “we are confident that we are close to a fair agreement.”He continued, “the district’s latest contract proposal is one that we can afford while still maintaining the minimum reserve requirement and remain fiscally sound three years out. So back then, we could get traveling nurses, we could get registry nurses, we could hire more nurses locally," Van Gorder said. "Today, this is a national situation and we cannot recruit travelers, we cannot recruit registry nurses, and unfortunately, a number of our healthcare providers are also getting sick."Van Gorder said the county has 24 staffed ICU beds left, out of about 670 available. He added that as hospitals get full and resources are strained, the type of care for anyone needing hospital care will change to crisis care.The top two floors of the Escondido hospital have been set up to serve as an FMS site. The site includes 202 beds that can be used for patients that don't require ICU care. The site could take in patients from other county hospitals that become overwhelmed, Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health, told ABC 10News a few weeks ago."It could be beds that we would offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet," he said.California's cumulative ICU bed capacity hit 1.1% on Wednesday, with the Southern California region at 0%. Three other regions were also under the state's regional stay-at-home orders activated after a region dips under 15% ICU capacity.San Diego County reported 348 coronavirus ICU cases on Wednesday and an additional 2,598 COVID-19 cases.Van Gorder said the county and hospitals project that hospitalizations will continue to grow and peak on Jan. 10, 2021, with about 1,827 patients, and ICU cases will peak on Jan. 11, with about 483 patients."Today, the governor announced the federal medical station at Palomar Medical Center is going to be activated. (KGTV) -- The County is investigating complaints from neighbors that a business owner with a criminal history for fraud may have converted a former hotel into a drug treatment center without proper permitting.Residents living near the former site of the Tuscany Village Resort on Circle R Way in unincorporated Escondido say they started noticing people wandering trough their neighborhood this summer."The people that are staying there have told us they're getting treatment," said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified.The property was acquired in March by NSI Services, LLC, according to public records. The company identifies itself as a "drug rehab" in its incorporating paperwork."Our concern is the safety and well-being of our community with a gentleman who seems to have disregard for the law," the resident said.NSI Services is owned by Larry Burns, an entrepreneur with several aliases who served prison time for mail and wire fraud and has been charged with crimes in at least three states.Burns, who also goes by Lawrence Burzynski, did not respond to phone calls by 10News seeking comment Monday or Tuesday.Burns was once the president of the Escondido-based Crosby Centers and is listed as a director of the Crosby Clinic on its website. Neighbors say they've seen a Crosby Clinic van parked at the resort.The clinic advertises drug rehab services along with treatments for traumatic brain injuries and CTE, and attracted media attention for treating former NFL players. In 2015, the NFL Players Association issued a warning to players about Burns, urging players using his services to "exercise extreme caution."Burzynski "has accumulated numerous convictions for felony FRAUD related violations," the bulletin read. "He has been convicted in federal prosecutions in Wyoming, Colorado, California and elsewhere."The old Tuscany Village Resort is not zoned for drug rehabilitation or medical services. After complaints by neighbors, code compliance inspectors began investigating the property on August 7, according to a letter from County Planning and Development Services Director Mark Wardlaw.The owner "indicated they had not yet finalized their plans for the property" but "noted that he may use the property as a resort that may also provide brain injury and other medical treatments," the letter stated. The owner, who was not identified in the letter, said he did not intend to offer drug or alcohol treatments at the facility."We will continue to keep our code compliance case open until we have received all the information required to classify the use," Wardlaw wrote.Staff gave the owner a 0 citation on September 12 for improperly storing items in the parking lot. When a 10News reporter visited the property Monday, there was still furniture and other items in the parking lot.The owner has until October 9 to clean up the property, said County spokeswoman Tammy Glenn."We will continue to update residents in the area and work with the property owner to ensure compliance with County codes," she said.Late Tuesday, a man who identified himself as one of Burns' employees contacted 10News, saying the hotel was undergoing renovations and would open next year as a Bavarian-style spa. The man named Jeff said other than himself, no other Crosby Clinic employees were working at the property and the resort would not be used for drug treatment."They think because they see a Crosby van it's going to be drug and alcohol [treatment], but that's not the case," he said.
