Want to know how old your dog is in human years? A new study states that calculating every dog year isn't equal to 7 human years. That's because your dog ages differently than you.Researchers at the University of California San Diego’s school of medicine said in a news release that a 1-year-old dog is similar to a 30-year-old person. But a 4-year-old pup is identical to a 52-year-old human."The formula is based on the changing patterns of methyl groups in dog and human genomes — how many of these chemical tags and where they’re located — as they age," researchers said in the release. "Since the two species don’t age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out it’s not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest."This graph formula, which was created from the study, will match up the age of your dog with the comparable human age.Lead researcher Trey Ideker said that dogs that are younger age faster compared to humans.“This makes sense when you think about it — after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn’t an accurate measure of age," Ideker said. For the new study, which was published in the journal Cell Systems, samples of blood from 105 Labrador retrievers were studied.Researchers plan to study other dog breeds to see if their method holds up. 1359
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump faces a fresh test of his ability to draw a crowd during a pandemic when he visits Arizona on Tuesday after his sparsely attended weekend rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He’ll also be reminding voters of one of his key 2016 promises as he visits the wall under construction at the U.S.-Mexico border.Later, Trump will address young Republicans at a Phoenix megachurch. The rally, organized by an organization called “Students for Trump,” is scheduled to start around 5:40 p.m. ET.The president’s smaller-than-expected crowd in deep red Oklahoma over the weekend has sharpened the focus on his visit to Arizona, which doubles as a 2020 battleground state and a surging coronavirus hot spot.Trump claims he “actually had a nice crowd” in Oklahoma. 787
Voters in Florida have passed an amendment to the state constitution that raises the minimum wage in the state to an hour.According to the Associated Press, voters overwhelmingly supported Amendment 2, which passed with 61% support.Currently, the minimum wage in the state is .56 an hour. The AP reports that supporters of the amendment believed raising the minimum wage will raise the quality of life for millions of residents and argued that living on an .56 minimum wage was not possible given the state's rising cost of living.Opponents of the amendment say raising the minimum wage will stifle economic recovery in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and have a negative impact on the state's tourism industry.Though a minimum wage was a central part of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's campaign, Florida went for President Donald Trump. 870
WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden is sharply criticizing President Donald Trump over a report that he says, if true, contains a “truly shocking revelation” about the commander in chief and his failure to protect U.S. troops and stand up to Russia. The New York Times has reported that American intelligence officials concluded months ago that a Russian military intelligence unit secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The report says Trump was briefed but took no action. The White House denies Trump was briefed on what it calls "alleged intelligence.” 611
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Barack Obama has helped raise a record-breaking .6 million from more than 175,000 individual donors in a grassroots fundraiser for presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.Obama is warning Democrats against being “complacent or smug” about the presidential race.He is telling them to get engaged with the campaign and says, “whatever you've done is not enough.”The small-dollar fundraiser Tuesday kicked off what Obama’s team says will likely be a busy schedule heading into the fall, as he looks to help elect not just Biden but also Democrats running for House and Senate. 619
