TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Migrants in a caravan of Central Americans scrambled Wednesday to reach the U.S. border, arriving by the hundreds in Tijuana, while U.S. authorities across the border were readying razor wire security barriers.Mexican officials in Tijuana were struggling to deal with a group of 357 migrants who arrived aboard nine buses Tuesday and another group of 398 that arrived Wednesday."Mexico has been excellent; we have no complaint about Mexico. He ran quickly back to the fence.Tijuana's head of migrant services, Cesar Palencia Chavez, said authorities offered to take the migrants to shelters immediately, but they initially refused."They wanted to stay together in a single shelter," Palencia Chavez said, "but at this time that's not possible" because shelters are designed for smaller groups and generally offer separate facilities for men, women and families.But he said that after their visit to the border, most were taken to shelters in groups of 30 or 40.With a total of three caravans moving through Mexico including 7,000 to 10,000 migrants in all, questions arose as to how Tijuana would deal with such a huge influx, especially given U.S. moves to tighten border security and make it harder to claim asylum.On Wednesday, buses and trucks carried some migrants into the state of Sinaloa along the Gulf of California and further northward into the border state of Sonora.The bulk of the main caravan appeared to be about 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) from the border, but was moving hundreds of miles per day.The Rev. Miguel Angel Soto, director of the Casa de Migrante — House of the Migrant — in the Sinaloa capital of Culiacan, said about 2,000 migrants had arrived in that area. He said the state government, the Roman Catholic Church and city officials in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, were helping the migrants.The priest also said the church had been able to get "good people" to provide buses for moving migrants northward. He said so far 24 buses had left Escuinapa on an eight-drive to Navojoa in Sonora state. Small groups were reported in the northern cities of Saltillo and Monterrey, in the region near Texas.From Sonora, some migrants said they had already caught buses from to Tijuana.About 1,300 migrants in a second caravan were resting at a stadium in Mexico City, where the first group had stayed last week. By early Wednesday, another 1,100 migrants from the third and last caravan had also arrived at the stadium.Like most of those in the third caravan, migrant Javier Pineda is from El Salvador, and hopes to reach the United States. Referring to the first caravan nearing the end of the journey, Pineda said "if they could do it, there is no reason why we can't."It is unclear whether the two caravans would merge or when they would set out on the road north.Many say they are fleeing poverty, gang violence and political instability in the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.Mexico has offered refuge, asylum or work visas, and its government said Monday that 2,697 temporary visas had been issued to individuals and families to cover them during the 45-day application process for more permanent status. Some 533 migrants had requested a voluntary return to their countries, the government reported.The U.S. government said it was starting work Tuesday to "harden" the border crossing from Tijuana ahead of the caravans.Customs and Border Protection announced it was closing four lanes at the busy San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry in San Diego, California, so it could install infrastructure.That still leaves a substantial path for the tens of thousands of people who cross daily: Twenty-three lanes remain open at San Ysidro and 12 at Otay Mesa.San Ysidro is the border's busiest crossing, with about 110,000 people entering the U.S. every day. They’re a lifeline to the local economy.“That’s crazy because, I mean, it’s our history,” said Pedro Bonilla, owner of El Buen Taco.Bonilla says these trees attract tourists and with Big Basin park closed for at least a year due to fire damage, his taco truck could have to close.“We weren’t prepared mentally or financially prepared for this,” he said.Thousands of acres have burned at Big Basin since fires sparked a few weeks ago, torching everything from the ancient trees to historic structures that were built in the early 1900s.“It’s hard to grasp you know how much damage the fire did to the infrastructure, said Mark McKenna of California State Parks.While McKenna says redwood trees are resilient, their recovery could take years.“The complexity of the rebuilding process, it's daunting when you see the damage that happened up there,” he said.That damage is both extensive and expensive. (KGTV) – A large brush fire burning in the Cleveland National Forest’s Trabuco Canyon is spreading quickly Monday afternoon. The fire, dubbed the Holy Fire, was reported around 1:30 p.m. near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek roads, according to KABC.The Orange County Fire Authority said the blaze grew quickly from between seven and 10 acres to at least 4,000 by 8 p.m. and is currently spreading at a moderate rate. Thieves stole priceless royal artifacts in a daring raid on a Swedish cathedral before escaping by speedboat, police said.The thieves made off with crown jewels belonging to former Swedish monarchs Karl IX and Kristina from the Str?ngn?s Cathedral to the west of the capital, Stockholm, on Tuesday.Two crowns and a golden orb adorned with a crucifix were taken from the cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, according to a police report. The items date from the early 17th century.A witness told Swedish media that he was eating lunch when he saw two people running toward a boat, which they sped away in.Police said several thieves were involved in the heist. They fled in an open-topped motorboat across the sea from the base of the church. Several police patrol boats as well as police helicopters joined a hunt for the perpetrators.The cathedral was placed on lockdown, CNN affiliate Expressen reported, and the search for the thieves continued on Wednesday."To a limited extent we are still looking for (them) both on the ground and at sea. For days, they are silent and unseen until the dreaded stomach flu.“I got it and I was down for three days and then it slowly hit two of my other daughters. That was the whole second week of Christmas break was spent nursing someone back to health.”Melissa Macavage, of Detroit, Michigan, has three girls, a busy job and is an active volunteer at her church. To say her family is busy, is an understatement.“Volleyball practice or volleyball game, homework, dinner, picking up my other daughter from her various events,” said Macavage.  “Not much time for sickness, so after that stomach flu took the family out last winter, I took it to the next level,” she adds.“Hand washing, I am militant about that. As soon as they get home from whatever their event is, I make them wash their hands,” Macavage explains.So, we wanted to find out just what is lurking on those everyday items, the things all of us touch multiple times a day, every day of the week.The lab at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit provided us with these swabs and taught our executive producer how to collect a sample.We took seven samples including the television remote, Melissa’s cell phone, the bathroom door knob, the refrigerator door handle, a lunch box, the steering wheel and Melissa’s purse.“When you rub the swab all over the specimen you’re targeting, so whether it’s the phone or door handle you’re picking up the bacteria that are colonized on the surface, then we bring it back to the lab and put it on these culture media.”  Dr. Linoj Samuel is a microbiologist and Dr. Katherine Reyes specializes in infectious diseases. They work together at Henry Ford Hospital, regularly looking at samples to determine what an illness is and where it came from.They analyzed our seven samples and shared them with Melissa.“Most bacteria and viruses can cause some serious infection and some viruses like the flu virus can live on a surface for up to 8 hours,” Samuel explains.When it came to the remote, there was a little surprise: some germs live on those surfaces normally and yet some should not be there like bacteria or germs that are on our mouth, then you see them on remote control.“I wonder if they were having a snack then went and reached the remote,” she adds.The item we thought would be the worst, turned out to be clear of bacteria.“The cell phone, surprisingly, we did not find any bacteria which is somewhere that I would have expected to find a lot of bacteria but that might suggest recent cleaning, so it’s hard to say.”The one item with the most and fastest growing bacteria was the refrigerator door handle.“If you see this, that one can look scary,” Reyes said.The doctors tell us none of the bacteria found on Melissa’s items is the type that would get a healthy person sick, but someone with a compromised immune system, the elderly or perhaps someone with a cut could develop an illness or an infection.So, what can you do?
