DALLAS, Texas — Some co-workers have found something new to bond them this holiday: A cocktail class at the office.Marisa Jeffrey said her office wanted to do something different this year, so she dressed as a fireplace. “I really liked the light up aspect of this one…,” she said, pointing to the holiday onesie she was wearing. It’s been insane,” Jenkins said.Word-of-mouth has led to lines out the door… even on a weekday — all for a Christmas bar.It’s a “snowball effect, so to speak,” Jenkins said.That snowball started rolling 5 years ago at New York bar “Mace”— where founder Greg Boehm started the concept, calling it “Miracle on 9th St.” The name pays homage to the 1947 holiday classic, “Miracle on 34th St.”He’s since turned “Miracle” into a franchise. And as of this season, they’ve partnered with 84 bars around the world, including Panama, Mexico and New Zealand.He thinks he knows the secret to its popularity.“Christmas is generally a very stressful time of year for a lot of people, and I think a lot’s happening in the world that’s creating additional stress,” said Greg Boehm, founder of Miracle. “ And when you walk into a Miracle its very much transporting you into a different place, a different time. There’s some nostalgia.”Bars such as Hide pay a flat rate to the Miracle team.Everything from the greeting-card inspired menus, the glassware — even the garnishes — are on theme. Stirring up a signature Christmapolitan cocktail — their take on a cosmo — Jenkins’ co-owner at Hide, Nick Backlund, says he thought he’d quickly get sick of the holiday tunes.“I was gonna be really mad about Christmas music every day but now I’m singing them all the time,” Backlund said.Jenkins says the response to a Christmas bar is, in a way, heartwarming.“To be honest it gives me a little bit of hope. it’s something that, especially in the weird kind of climate we have today, people are out being happy, spreading cheer, having fun, being lighthearted,” Jenkins said.The only thing that could make it better? The Bee recognizes the important responsibility to take action that protects the health and well-being of its participants including the spellers, their families, the local sponsors, employees of The E.W. Scripps Company and others who support the event known as Bee Week. The executive order from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people until the termination of the state of emergency in Maryland as well as recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscore the decision to suspend the national finals.The suspension includes all in-person events and the live national broadcast the week of May 24. If possible, the Bee will work with local sponsors, spellers, convention partners and ESPN to reschedule the 93rd Scripps National Spelling Bee for later this year. The world is navigating through uncertainty, and while the timing of the national finals is just outside the eight-week window recommended by the CDC, this is the safest and most responsible action. This was a difficult decision that unfortunately will disappoint students who have spent a great deal of time studying and preparing, along with their parents and teachers who have supported them. WXYZ went to Jillian Rippolone’s home as she met with diabetics. They spoke about their struggles getting the insulin they need. It's a struggle Rippolone first experienced when, as a child, her parents lost their health insurance. “We were turned away because we didn’t have the money at the time to afford our insulin, which is this little bottle right here," she said. "This was 0 in the '90s. I needed three of them.”Rippolone says she feared for her life as her parents worked to get the money needed. Now, she says the situation is worse for many patients because the cost of insulin has increased in the United States. “For my 30 day supply, it is ,020,” Rippolone said. Michele Busticker, a woman meeting with other diabetics at Rippolone’s home, said she thought she was covered because she had health insurance. Then she dropped a vile on the floor. Insurance wouldn't cover a replacement.“I had to actually admit myself to the emergency room to get insulin to survive,” Busticker said. Mike Cowan says he turned to Rippolone for help when an Uber passenger stole his medicine as he drove.“Insurance isn’t going to make up for that, so I had to seek it out on the black market,” Cowan said. The black market he turned to is a vast network of people who offer insulin online. Rippolone is a leader in it. “Because when there is a diabetic in need you get it. Facebook has a message for the skeptical news industry: We're here to help.On Friday, the company is publicly introducing Facebook News, a new section of the app that will promote a wide variety of stories.The section is in a testing phase now, and it will become widely available to all Facebook users in a few months."This is a huge moment for our relationship with the news industry," Facebook's head of news partnerships Campbell Brown said in an interview with CNN Business."I know people have doubted us and our commitment to the news business," she said. "This should signal that we truly want to be a champion for great reporting."Facebook has hired a handful of journalists to choose "today's stories," a top layer of important headlines that will appear when users first open the News section.Algorithms will come up with personalized recommendations for further reading, tailored to the news "you read, share and follow," the company says.All of the stories come from outside sources -— Facebook isn't producing any of its own news coverage.Some publishers will be paid for opening up their content to Facebook, but others will not.
