SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local officials say a record number of San Diegans died of meth last year.According to the county's 2020 Meth Report Card, 546 San Diegans died from meth in 2019, 63 more than the previous record of 483 set in 2018.The County Medical Examiner's Office says people most impacted by meth are those 45 years of age or older, which represented 319 of the meth-related deaths. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's Signing Day for Lincoln High School seniors.In a first-ever ceremony for the school, college-bound seniors were honored for their hard work and accomplishments on campus Tuesday."It is to inspire underclassmen to aspire towards greatness like their senior counterparts," ASB advisor Malykke Bacon said in an email. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local supporters of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump were watching the election vote count closely throughout Friday.Ellen Nash, who heads the San Diego chapter of the Black American Association of Califorina, a minority advocacy group, put up her Biden/Harris yard sign about a month ago.During the election season, she helped organize a voter registration campaign. Since election night, it's been a constant case of the nerves."Incredibly excited, praying night and day," said Nash.Her eyes have been glued to the television and coverage of the vote count. Throughout Friday, her candidate edged closer to being declared the winner."I will feel relieved that the trauma is over. I'm speaking as a black woman who has been under significant trauma the last four years, in terms of some of the language and behavior of the leader of the free world. Hopeful change is coming," said Nash.There is no questioning her dislike of President Trump, but on this day, she is focused on the country’s future."I believe Biden can bring this country together. I believe he can help us heal as a nation," said Nash.It's a different opinion for local Trump supporter, Blake Marnell.During the campaign, Marnell garnered national attention for wearing a brick wall suit, illustrating his support of President Trump’s border security policy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In the wake of this summer's protests over racial inequality, a high school athletic director from San Diego is trying to change a system he says doesn't have enough minority representation.Francis Parker AD Anthony Thomas started NOMAD, the National Organization of Minority Athletic Directors."We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable," says Thomas. "And we have to have difficult conversations within our community."Thomas began the organization with three other AD's from Oakland, Minneapolis, and Richmond, Virginia.They say NOMAD will guide and mentor minority coaches, athletes, and administrators who want to further their careers.Thomas says seeing the racial unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death was a turning point."I saw myself under that knee. I saw my student-athletes under that knee. I saw my nephew under that knee. So it was really a call to action," says Thomas.Thomas' school plays in the Coastal Conference. He noticed that only two of its 18 schools have black athletic directors. Thomas saw similar numbers across the state and country but couldn't find any specific data because no one had been tracking it yet on the high school level."You have to lead by example," says Thomas. "That's what we decided to do as Nomad is to get out ahead of it, and no longer wait, no longer be complicit."In its first five months, NOMAD has grown to more than 200 members. They've already held a handful of virtual webinars teaching people how to advance their careers in athletics. Thomas wants to make sure everyone has representation and opportunity."The data tells a story," says Thomas. "There's not a lot of opportunities for underrepresented people to become athletic directors, and we would like to see that change in the best way possible. And we want to facilitate hoping in that shift."Thomas thinks this can also help students by giving minority athletes people they can look up to who also look like them.He says NOMAD can also help guide conversations between players and coaches of different ethnic and racial groups that intersect in sports."This job is not about color. It's not about ethnicity. It's about passion. It's about loving kids. And that's what we want to do," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington.The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash.The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit.The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate.The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837
