MISSION BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - After five years of delays and construction, the Plunge Pool in Mission Beach is scheduled to re-open on June 1."There was a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross with this thing, so we've taken our time," explains Belmont Park General Manager Steve Thomas. "We've invested the capital to make sure that things are where we want them to be. It feels good to be involved in a project like that."In addition to rebuilding the pool, the new Plunge will include a state of the art fitness center, run by Fit Athletic Club.The pool, which opened in 1925, closed in 2014 in dire need of repairs. That process didn't begin until January of 2017 because of issues with the Coastal Commission and other government entities.Throughout construction, people in Mission Beach have been wondering when it will reopen while reminiscing of their time spent in the old Plunge."Our kids, we used to bring them here when they were little," says Sharon Delgadillo. She and her husband Henry walk by the Plunge while they exercise in Mission Beach and have stopped frequently to check on its progress. "It will be awesome that another generation can enjoy this pool too.""It's a piece of our history," says Mission Beach Town Council President Matthew Gardner. He says the management from Belmont Park and the Fit Athletic Club has done an excellent job at providing updates to the council at their monthly meetings. He was thrilled to hear they have an opening date set for June 1st."You better believe I'll be first in line to get a membership for the pool," says Gardner.The Fit is already selling memberships to the Club, which will include pool access. A manager says they're offering a /month special through the end of March.Meanwhile, Belmont Park management says the pool will have its own membership that people can buy if they don't want the full athletic club experience. Those will be sold as monthly or daily passes. Belmont Park is still working out the price points for that.Business owners around Mission Beach and Belmont Park also feel the pool will be a catalyst for more economic growth in the area. Gardner owns a beach rental store next to the pool and says he's already seen an increase of customers who ask about the pool."I built my rental shop where it is because of how much effort they put into the pool," he says.Belmont Park officials say the unique mix of a large pool near the beach will bring in locals and tourists."It's going to be right up there next to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo," says Thomas of how popular he thinks the Plunge will be when it re-opens. The virus disrupted supply lines all over the world and put farms like the Batemans in danger of running out of feed.“We just couldn’t get into places to get the animal feed,” Bateman explained. “Places like Washington state, they wouldn’t even let our trucks in.”Bateman said the timing of the partnership couldn’t have been better.“The cows love this stuff,” he said with a smile. “This is like cow candy for them.”Now, Bateman sleeps a bit better at night knowing his cows will get fed regardless of the weather or a worldwide pandemic.“This whole thing has really brought home the importance of having a fresh, local supply of feed,” Bateman said. “This is a really big thing for us and feeling secure about our future.” 2488

Mykehia Curry is going to be the first member of her family to go to college, but she needed a little help to get there.The Macon, Georgia, teen took out student loans to pay for her tuition and housing at Albany State University, but she didn't have money for some of the things she'd need for her first time living away from home.Curry's mom is on disability, so money has been tight.On Saturday, just days before she was scheduled to leave for school, she asked God for help."I wrote a note that said 'God please help me get the rest of my stuff for college,'" Curry told CNN. "Then I said 'Amen, I love you God' and I wrote my name and number."She tied the note to three helium balloons leftover from her grandmother's birthday celebration and let them go."When I was writing the note, I was just trying to reach out to God. I didn't know where it would land," she said. "I thought that someone would pick it up and call me and tell me they got it or just throw it in the trash."The balloons flew about 15 miles northeast and carried the note to Gray, Georgia.That's where Jerome Jones, a Baptist minister, found it. Jones also works for Georgia Power and spotted the balloons on Monday while he was out on a job."I saw something shiny and floating, so I walked over there and I got it and it was balloons with a note tied to it," Jones told CNN affiliate WMGT. "They floated all night and they landed right in my hands, I mean, practically."He called Curry and offered to buy what she needed."He said they would love to help me out," Curry said. (KGTV) - Two National City elementary schools were evacuated Monday morning due to a strong smell of gas fumes, leading parents to pick up their children at different campuses.The emergency call was reported about 9 a.m. at El Toyon Elementary at 2000 Division St. and Rancho de la Nación at 1830 Division St.National City Police and SDG&E evaluated the scenes and determined the odor was coming from a routine bleed to the gas lines. The children were not in any danger and there was no emergency, according to police.More than 1,000 students and staff members had already been evacuated to the Wrigley’s grocery store shopping plaza. More than 100 people are believed dead Friday after a Cubana de Aviacion Boeing 737-200 crashed on takeoff from Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, according to Cuba's state-run media.Three female passengers were in critical condition after surviving the crash into thick vegetation just miles from the runway, the state-run newspaper Granma reported.Flight DMJ 0972, with at least 104 people on board, was headed to the eastern Cuban city of Holguin when it plummeted into in an agricultural area in the Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood at 12:08 p.m., according to Granma.Orestes Bentancour, who lives near the crash site, told CNN that he was drawn out of his home by the "enormous noise" the plane made on takeoff. He said the plane appeared to swerve to one side and revved its engines before crashing.Five crew members on board were Mexican nationals, according to Mexico's Civil Aviation Authority.The nearly 30-year-old Boeing 737-200 was owned by the Mexican airline Damojh and leased to Cubana de Aviacion, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.
