SANTA ANA (CNS) - A Colorado man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of killing an 11-year-old girl in Newport Beach in 1973, with authorities saying DNA technology helped them track down the suspect.James Alan Neal, 72, was arrested around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in connection with the death of Linda Ann O'Keefe, who lived in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach police Chief Jon Lewis said. The girl disappeared while walking home from summer school on July 6, 1973, and her strangled body was recovered the following morning in a ditch in the Back Bay area. Police said the girl was last seen standing near a man in a blue or turquoise van.Lewis credited ``the latest in DNA technology'' for helping crack the case that has stymied investigators for more than four decades.``We have never forgotten Linda or the tragic events of July 1973,'' Lewis said at a news conference announcing the arrest. He said the girl's death changed the community, making parents think twice about letting their children outside alone.Neal has been charged with murder and District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the suspect could potentially face a death sentence, although there is some question about whether capital punishment could be applied in the case given the date of the killing and the laws that were on the books at the time.Newport Beach police last July mounted a Twitter campaign releasing information about the killing to try to spur new leads. The tweets detailing the last hours of Linda's life included photographs from the crime scene and a newly created ``snapshot'' of the suspect that was put together by scientists at Parabon NanoLabs. The tweets concluded with a video that included interviews with the detectives who have worked on finding the girl's killer through the years.Newport Beach police last year hired Parabon, a Virginia-based DNA technology company specializing in a process using genetic material, to build a sort of composite sketch of a suspect at 25 years old and how the killer might look today. 2048

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom says California is turning the corner in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. He cited a significantly lower number of confirmed new cases as California begins to clear backlogged cases caused by a technical error. Newsom says he's also encouraged by the downward trend in hospitalizations, which have fallen 21% in the past two weeks. Dr. Roger Lewis, director with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, says there’s been “a clear decline” in hospitalizations there. California reported 180 additional deaths from the virus Wednesday, bringing the state's coronavirus deaths to more than 10,600. 674

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (KGTV) - A serial killer and former Camp Pendleton Marine who was sentenced to the death penalty may have killed himself at San Quentin State Prison Friday, prison officials said.Andrew Urdiales, 54, was found unresponsive during a security check of his cell late Friday night, according to staff members. Correctional officers performed CPR but Urdiales was pronounced dead less than an hour later. An autopsy will be performed but his death is being investigated as a suicide, officials said.RELATED: Serial killer convicted of Southern California murdersAn Orange County jury sentenced Urdiales to death one month ago for the murders of five women in San Diego, Mission Viejo, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City in the 1980s and 90s. Urdiales had been previously convicted of killing three Illinois women in the 1990s.Urdiales’ victim in San Diego, 31-year-old Maryann Wells, was shot in the head in a deserted industrial complex on Second Ave. in downtown San Diego in 1988. Investigators said Urdiales had sex with Wells then took back the he had paid her. Urdiales left behind a condom that eventually provided a DNA link, implicating him in the case.Another death row inmate was found dead Sunday night at San Quentin. Virendra Govin was convicted of killing four people by setting their home on fire in 2004. Govin's death is also being investigated as a suicide. Prison officials do not believe it was related to the death of Urdiales. 1483
