A bill that would ban the most common abortion method used in the second trimester of pregnancy was signed into law Friday by Ohio Gov. John Kasich.Senate Bill 145 prohibits the dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure, in which the cervix is dilated and the contents of the uterus extracted. Though there is no exception in the law in cases of rape or incest, there is one if the mother's life is at risk.Any abortion provider who defies this law could face fourth-degree felony charges, including prison time and fines. The Republican governor's decision to sign off on this legislation sparked immediate backlash from abortion rights advocates.Kasich, who has signed more than 20 laws restricting abortion access in his eight years in office, has "again let the people of Ohio down by using extreme legislation to turn medical decision-making into political ideology," said Iris Harvey, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, in a written statement."Patients, and the medical providers who serve them, rely on the overwhelming medical evidence that shows abortion is one of the safest medical procedures," she continued. "The method ban dangerously limits people's options, undermines patients' constitutional right to access safe, legal abortion, and compromises medical providers' decision making."Ohio Right to Life lauded the governor's support of the "Dismemberment Abortion Ban," which is slated to go into effect in March."Ohioans can sleep easier tonight, knowing that the horrendous practice of dismemberment abortions is behind us," said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life.He praised the outgoing governor and the Legislature for backing efforts to block abortions, saying "all of these initiatives have led to abortions decreasing by more than 25% in Ohio, and half of Ohio's abortion clinics shutting down."Looking ahead to Gov.-elect Mike DeWine, Gonidakis said, "the prospect of ending abortion in Ohio has never looked better."Bans on the D&E procedure have been signed in 10 states, including Ohio. But of those other nine states, all but two -- Mississippi and West Virginia -- have seen their laws at least temporarily blocked by the courts. The new Ohio law was one of two abortion bills to recently land on Kasich's desk. Also Friday, he vetoed the second bill: a six-week abortion ban, dubbed "the heartbeat bill," which he also vetoed in 2016.DeWine, who takes office next month, has suggested that he would sign such legislation if given the chance. 2525

A Florida family is mourning the loss of their puppy Zeus, who died while protecting two of their four children from a venomous snake.Oriley Richardson, 10, was playing in his family's backyard in Webster on September 23 when the 9-month-old pit bull suddenly jumped towards him, his mother Gina Richardson told CNN on Sunday. Oriley noticed the pup attacking something on the ground, but thought it was a rope.It was a coral snake. And Zeus was doing his best to keep it away from Oriley. As the dog struggled to keep the snake at bay, Orion, 11, stepped into the backyard to change Zeus' water. That's when Zeus decided to lay down on the snake, using his body weight to smother the deadly predator and prevent it from harming the boys.Orion noticed that Zeus' eyes looked "bugged out," Richardson said. That's when they turned him over and discovered the snake, which had bitten Zeus four times before he bit off and swallowed its head. The family rushed Zeus to a nearby animal hospital, where staff immediately administered anti-venom.Sadly, it was too late. Zeus died the following day -- the same day as Oriley's birthday."I just started bawling," Richardson said. "My kids woke up and heard me crying and then they too started crying. We were all an emotional wreck."The family, including Sega, Zeus' mom, went to the hospital to say goodbye."Sega goes over to Zeus' head and puts her paws up on the table and takes a sniff," said Richardson. "Her ears came back, she got down, she instantly jumped on the sofa next to me and put her head on my thigh in sorrow. At that moment not only was my family broken, but his own mother was broken."Richardson said she feels "forever grateful" to Zeus and considers him a hero. "I feel like I may have lost one of my children had he not been there," she said.Oriley is especially saddened over Zeus' death. "He was a good boy and I loved him with all my heart," he said. "I played with him all the time. I feel sad and I miss him."Gary Richardson, the boys' father, said he hopes Zeus' selfless act will help change public perception of pit bulls."He was my best friend," said Gary Richardson. "I'm torn between wanting to be happy that this situation has brought awareness to his breed and their kind and loving nature, and the sorrow of having lost him." 2313

A 9-year-old child accused of causing a mobile home fire that killed three children and two adults in central Illinois has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder. The juvenile also was charged with two counts of arson and one count of aggravated arson."You know, would he? I don't know if he understands what he's really done," neighbor Liza Munoz said. "Do you know what I mean? Can you imagine? And a child doing that?" The April 6 fire killed a 1-year-old, two 2-year-olds, a 34-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman at the Timberline Mobile Home Park near the village of Goodfield, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said the fire was started intentionally. No child as young as this one has been accused in a mass killing since at least 2006, according to a mass murder database that tracks all U.S. homicides since then in which four or more people were killed, not including the offender, over a period of 24 hours, regardless of weapon, location, victim-offender relationship or motive."I think that he should be followed well into his 30s or 40s," Munoz said. "You know, he should be on probation for a long time for this. It shouldn't just be until he's 18." 1230

Protests are erupting across the country. People are taking to the streets in major American cities calling for change after George Floyd, a black man, died in Minnesota after being restrained by a white police officer. Cameras captured the Minneapolis police officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck with Floyd pleading, “I can’t breathe.” Days after his death, Floyd’s words echoed through downtown Denver with hundreds of people coming together, creating a human wall and blocking freeway access. “The fact that they say that they’re scared or whatever, mother (cuss word) don’t get the job,” said US Army veteran Aubrey Rose. With an American flag hanging upside down on his shoulder, Rose has gone from defending his country to questioning those policing it. “This is important because I risked my life to uphold the constitution and black people’s rights are being walked all over,” he said. While Rose called what happened in Minnesota “ugly” and “unjust,” he believes these protests are both “beautiful” and “necessary.” “It really makes me proud to be an American right now,” he said. “Even with everything going on people came out to support.” Support by protesters making their voices heard. And as the crowd grew and protesters started yelling at police, law enforcement put on riot gear. People were quick to question that decision. “Where was all your gear when (cuss word) white people were storming up to the (cuss word) capitol with AK-47s?,” asked one protester. “Black people peacefully protest and we are reprimanded for it.” While holding signs saying black live matter and chanting blue lives murder, people stopped by this protest, started sitting on top of the cars, giving them a unique view.“I feel like with this outbreak there’s going to be a lot of rebirth within the country,” one man said. “You can’t breathe sometimes but you must move forward.”On Friday, the former officer seen kneeling on Floyd's neck, Derek Chauvin, was arrested and charged with the 36-year-old's murder and manslaughter. 2038
