AUSTIN, Texas – More people have now voted early in Texas for Tuesday’s general election than voted in total in the state during the 2016 election.As of Thursday, data on the secretary of state’s website shows a total of 9,009,850 Texans had voted either by mail or in person, and there’s still one more day of early voting in the state.That number surpasses the record-breaking 8,969,226 votes that were cast in the state during the 2016 election.The high voting turnout signals that Texas may be a true battleground state in the 2020 election.Democrats are trying to take advantage of the enthusiasm to flip the traditionally Republican state and collect its 38 electoral votes. As the Carr Fire becomes the seventh most destructive wildfire in California's history, renowned chefs Guy Fieri and José Andrés are doing everything they can to help feed the evacuees and first responders."My team and I got involved. My son and his buddies, and a bunch of my buddies, loaded up the caravan from wine country and drove four hours up here," Fieri said."We are just working arm-in-arm with the Salvation Army, local chefs, residents and everybody helping out all of the evacuees."More than 12,300 firefighters are battling 15 wildfires burning across California. In total, these fires have burned more than 280,000 acres, and forced more than 44,000 residents to evacuate.The Carr Fire began on July 23 in Northern California, and on Saturday Fieri arrived in Redding, a city of almost 100,000 people where the fire swept through. Two days after Fieri got there, José Andrés' nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, joined him and fellow food first responders, Operation BBQ Relief."We hit the ground on Monday and started our meal operation today. Guy is heading to the Lake County Fire and we are taking over, and continue the efforts here in Redding," said Nate Mook, Executive Director for World Central Kitchen.With the help of Operation BBQ Relief, Fieri and his team were able to make over 1,000 meals twice a day, Mook said.BBQ Relief, whose main mission is to feed those affected by natural disasters in the United States, has around 30 volunteers and with World Central Kitchen's help it totals to 100 people on the ground to help feed those in need."We are planning to do 5,000 meals a day or more, depending on the need. We have the capacity and are prepared to cook 5,000 meals a day with no problem," Mook said.Fieri, alongside World Central Kitchen and BBQ Relief, are able to plan where help is needed the most by working with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, who oversee the incident response.That way they can travel across the state to help everyone affected by the multiple wildfires."It's unbelievable to see what folks are going through, but it's even more unbelievable just how great this community is, and [to see] all these folks that have come together," Fieri said.Andrés is not in California, but he has been monitoring the situation and will fly in if needed."We got six chefs in Redding. Depending on the need we will bring more chefs and volunteers. We don't know what the next four days will look like, so he will be paying close attention," Mook said.Andrés recently left Guatemala, where he and his team were able to make more than 325,000 meals for those?affected by the volcano eruption last month.Mook said that even though the numbers can look a bit overwhelming, the volunteers get inspiration and passion to help those in need from all the support they receive from the communities."At the end of the day you just have to start somewhere, and just start cooking, cooking until everyone is fed," Mook said.As for Fieri, he takes pride in all the folks who drop everything just to help."We're in tough times ... with all of the things going on, you take a moment like this and you really see America is made of a lot of great people coming together," Fieri said. 3252

At least five Marines assigned to the prestigious ceremonial Silent Drill Platoon in Washington were placed in pretrial confinement in recent days due to allegations they were involved in hazing at least one Marine at the unit, according to three defense officials.Hearings that took place this week resulted in one Marine being released from confinement but all could still face charges as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has taken over the matter.The number of alleged victims has not been made public but the allegations came to light when one Marine came forward. Officials say a video had been made allegedly showing some Marines hitting at least one other Marine. It is not publicly known if that victim is the Marine who came forward.The platoon is a 24-man rifle unit that performs a drill exhibition largely in silence. It was founded in 1948 and performed for presidents and top officials as well as communities around the country tossing and spinning 10-pound M1 rifles with fixed bayonets.Multiple performances of the drill team were canceled in recent weeks due to the ongoing investigation, according to officials. The Marines did not publicize the reason for those cancellations or which performances were affected. The Marines said they began an investigation immediately at the unit, before turning it over the NCIS.The unit and the Marines are well known in the Washington community where they reside. BALTIMORE — Romance scams have nearly doubled this year, according to the FBI. The holidays coupled with the pandemic have many people feeling lonely. Dating sites help singles connect, but it's not always who you think it is.A Montgomery County man thought he was in a relationship with a woman named Brandy Bowens, instead, he lost ,000 in a romance scam. "It’s like there are claws in you that you can't seem to get out," he said.He didn't want to be identified but wants to warn others about how his five-year relationship ended in financial ruin."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me, trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," he said.His better judgment took a back seat when he was asked to be the go-between for the woman's art business. The FBI later informed him that he was involved in a money-laundering operation."That's a huge problem and continues to be a problem," said Supervisory Special Agent Keith Custer with the FBI Baltimore field office.Custer estimates that romance scams are up 30 to 50 percent. It's also one of the highest dollar value scams, and victims rarely get their money back.Custer is warning anyone with an online dating profile to research the person's photo and profile.
