SANTA ANA (CNS) - Orange County was removed from California's coronavirus monitoring list Sunday, starting the clock for all public schools in the county to potentially reopen in early September.The state mandates a county must be off the watch list for 15 days before all schools can reopen. Orange County's data on hospitalizations and other key metrics have been moving in the right direction, with the rate of county residents testing positive for COVID-19 at 5-point-4 percent, below the state's desired threshold of 8 percent.Underscoring the positive trends, county health officials reported just 153 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one additional death Sunday, bringing the county's totals to 45,954 cases and 897 fatalities.The data on hospitalizations continued to move in the right direction, with 380 people hospitalized and 111 of those in intensive care. There have been 37,452 documented recoveries.Orange County could be placed back on the list should it be flagged for exceeding any one of six different metrics for three consecutive days. Those metrics are the case rate, the percentage of positive tests, the average number of tests a county is able to perform daily, changes in the number of hospitalized patients and the percentage of ventilators and intensive care beds available.The decision to reopen schools would still be left to individual districts. Orange County officials say 24 elementary schools have already been approved to reopen, including six in the Los Alamitos Unified School District.For parents still leery of returning students to classrooms, Dr. Clayton Chau, the county's interim chief health officer and director of the Orange County Health Care Agency, said the county "encourages" them to continue online learning, "especially children who are at a higher risk."The county will provide tests for staff and students and a "full medical team" that includes pediatricians, while infectious disease experts from Children's Hospital of Orange County and UC Irvine "will be standing by to assist when needed," Chau said.Wednesday was the first day the county fell below the state's monitoring thresholds, Chau said.It is possible various business sectors that are shut down for commerce indoors may be allowed to return to normal, Chau said. SAN GABRIEL (CNS) - A multi-agency investigation was underway Sunday following a four-alarm fire that caused "extensive damage" to the historic 249-year-old San Gabriel Mission.Meanwhile, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez conducted a late- morning Mass at the Mission on Sunday and said a fundraising campaign is already underway to rebuild as the church's 250-year anniversary approaches."This destruction comes as we are getting ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this great mission. But this fire changes nothing. Mission San Gabriel will always be the spiritual heart of the Church in Los Angeles, the place from which the Gospel still goes forth," Gomez said during the homily."You trace your roots all the way back to the beginnings of the Christian faith in California, before the founding of the United States. In fact, you are one of the few Catholic communities in this continent that can claim to be founded by a saint. Last night I was praying to your founder, St. Junipero Serra, and reflecting on his words and witness," the archbishop continued. "And I thought, what would St. Junipero tell us this morning? And I remembered his beautiful little prayer: `Let us bear every hardship for the love of You and the salvation of souls. SANTA ANA (CNS) - A Colorado man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of killing an 11-year-old girl in Newport Beach in 1973, with authorities saying DNA technology helped them track down the suspect.James Alan Neal, 72, was arrested around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in connection with the death of Linda Ann O'Keefe, who lived in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach police Chief Jon Lewis said.The girl disappeared while walking home from summer school on July 6, 1973, and her strangled body was recovered the following morning in a ditch in the Back Bay area. Police said the girl was last seen standing near a man in a blue or turquoise van.Lewis credited ``the latest in DNA technology'' for helping crack the case that has stymied investigators for more than four decades.``We have never forgotten Linda or the tragic events of July 1973,'' Lewis said at a news conference announcing the arrest. (AP) -- A surfer was found dead face down in the water at Upper Trestles at San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.The Orange County Register reports South Sector Superintendent for State Parks Rich Haydon says the man, described as middle age, was seen struggling Saturday as he paddled out into the surf at the break just south of San Clemente's border.It's unclear if the man was struggling because of the surf conditions or because of health issues.Nearby surfers then noticed the man face down in the water.Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded and continued attempting CPR before declaring the man dead at the scene.The San Diego County Medical Examiner had not released the man's name as of Monday morning. 746
