A social media post from years ago can come back to haunt you and even cost you your job. 10News dug into how to clean up your online reputation even if it's too late. If it's on the internet, it's there forever. From college photos to angry twitter rants, they can all come back to haunt you long after you click 'post.' It's becoming such a problem that Dr. Rebecca Nee devotes an entire lecture to it at San Diego State. "Teachers and professors can sometimes be forgiving," said Dr. Nee. "But most employers are not."Last month, a woman was fired from Panera Bread after a video revealing the secret to making their mac n' cheese went viral. Two weeks earlier, a man dominated the internet when he made a sign asking for beer money on ESPN's College GameDay. The instant fame quickly turned into backlash after so-called racist tweets he sent eight years ago came to light. In a world always online, could you be next?"It can keep you from getting a job; it can keep you from the career of your dreams," said Dr. Nee. In San Diego, a man had identity concerns when he was falsely accused of felony grand theft. The District Attorney claimed he and other employees used stolen credit cards to buy merchandise from a Go Wireless store at the UTC mall. It turned out that Go Wireless mixed him up with another man by the same name. He was booked, fingerprinted and DNA tested before the case was dismissed. "I barely even see my son now, and the last thing I wanted to do was go to jail and not even see him at all."But the damage to his reputation was already done with information online that may last forever. And it happens all the time. That's where the company Reputation Defender comes in. "People are really confused about information that's out there on the internet about them," said CEO Rich Matta. "The fact that the internet never forgets."Matta says they work on managing your reputation and your privacy. "If there's something you don't like on page one of Google, most people are seeing it," he said.It could end up costing you a job, a relationship, and even approval for a loan. "The idea is to create a network of content that is stronger than whatever is negative out there in Google's eyes," said Matta. "Therefore pushing that negative content down to page two or below in google where very few people actually see it."But before you get to that point, try to keep it clean. "Most employers have complete control over who they hire and who they fire," said Nee. "They can simply say, 'this is not the type of person that we wish to have working for us,' then that's all they need to say." Even if you think it's private, it's probably not. "Someone could easily screenshot a Snapchat photo or video, and that can be used against you in various ways," said Nee. Just like a credit score, your online reputation carries years of information. One slip-up may be impossible to fix. "There's always a chance when you put something in digital form that it can get out there, and it can burn you in the end," said Nee. (KGTV) — Attorneys who challenged the use of Sharpies to complete election ballots in Phoenix are dismissing their lawsuit, according to the Associated Press.Roopali Desai, an attorney for Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, told the AP she was notified Saturday that lawyers who filed the lawsuit are ending their case.The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that election equipment was not able to record a voter's ballot because she used a Sharpie to complete it. (KGTV) — An inmate convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in San Diego was killed during an attack inside a California corrections facility this week.Officials said on Thursday, 41-year-old Jonathan Watson attacked two inmates with a weapon at California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, and State Prison in Corcoran. Both inmates suffered head wounds and were taken to a local medical center.One inmate, 48-year-old David Bobb, died from his injuries while being taken to the hospital. Bobb was sentenced in San Diego on Oct. 17, 2015 to life in prison with the possibility of parole for aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old.The other injured inmate is in critical condition at a local hospital.Officials say Watson has been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder and intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.The prison specializes in substance abuse treatment and houses more than 5,400 inmates. 970

(KGTV and KESQ) - The Santee attorney who was rescued after a fall in Joshua Tree National Park is speaking about the experience.Paul Hanks drove to the park to hike on his 54th birthday last week. He had intended to spend half a day ‘bouldering’ before returning home.Hanks’ plans took a painful turn when he slipped and fell about 20 feet, injuring his leg.“It happened. I slipped and it was just, having not slipped in 45 years, it was instant and total shock,” Hanks said.RELATED: Family details how hiker stayed alive in Joshua TreeHanks crawled for miles, yelling for help. Eventually he settled under a Joshua Tree for the night, hoping he could throw some loose dirt on himself for warmth. Hanks quickly ran out of food and supplies.“By the very first night, I was drinking my own urine. I had drank all of the water in my bottle and was refilling my bottle with my own urine.”Hanks said the decision saved his life. He later found rainwater to drink and ate a cactus.“It gave me some physical energy and it gave me some hope and it made me believe this is giving me the 24 hours I'm looking for,” said Hanks.On Hanks’ fifth day in the park, search and rescue teams found him.“These three angels appeared out of nowhere and I was... I was shocked,” Hanks said. “I just couldn't believe it. I didn't want to say I had given up. Multiple times I had written myself off as dead. That I was never going to see another human being again and they showed up.”The rescue team gave Hanks Gatorade and took him to safety. Hanks is being treated at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Family members say he’ll have several surgeries for fractures on his leg, heel, forehead and pelvis. Hanks is expected to make a full recovery. 1750
