POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says. This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows. The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease. With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired. While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

President Donald Trump on Monday remembered fallen service members at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, calling their love of country "more deep and more pure than most will ever know.""They marched into hell so that America could know the blessings of peace. They died so that freedom could live," Trump said.Trump also honored those whose loved ones died in combat, acknowledging "the depth of emotion that this day brings each year" to the families of the fallen."To every parent who weeps for a child, to every child who mourns for a parent and to every husband or wife whose heart has been torn in two today we ask God to comfort your pain, to ease your sorrow and to wipe away your tears," Trump said. "This is a very special day and today our whole country thanks you, embraces you and pledges to you we will never forget our heroes."The President delivered remarks at Arlington after he solemnly placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and stood in silence as a bugle played "Taps." 1020

President Donald Trump is at the Pérez Art Museum in Miami on Thursday night for a town hall moderated by Today host Savannah Guthrie as he took questions from voters as part of a town hall.CoronavirusTrump was evasive with Guthrie about whether or not he took a COVID-19 test on the day of his debate against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.Guthrie asked Trump when his last test was; he told her he tests quite a bit. Guthrie then asked if he tested the day of the debate, and Trump said he probably did.Trump did inform Guthrie that he has no remaining symptoms of the virus. He did add that his doctors told him that his lungs were "a little bit infected" when he was hospitalized.Trump also claimed that the CDC found that "85% of the people that wear masks catch it." Guthrie responded that she knew of that study, and that's not what it says. Trump responded that is what he heard. The CDC study that Trump referred to didn't even state a percentage of who doesn't wear masks. Trump also added the US is "expected to lose 2,200,000 people and maybe more than that" from coronavirus. Trump was likely referring to this report from March by scholars that predicted that a total of 2.2 million Americans could die from COVID-19 if no preventative measures were placed.White SupremacyTrump denounced white supremacy during a town hall on Thursday while on NBC."I denounced white supremacy. I denounced White supremacy for years, but you always start with the question, you didn't ask Joe Biden whether or not he denounces Antifa," Trump said. "I denounced white supremacy. I denounce Antifa, and I denounce these people on the left that are burning down our cities, that are run by Democrats."QAnonDuring his town hall on NBC, Trump refused to denounce the QAnon conspiracy theory, telling Guthrie that he knows "nothing about QAnon."The conspiracy Guthrie referred to during Thursday's town hall was that the Democrats run a satanic pedophile ring, and Trump is its savior. Guthrie then asked Trump if he could state that it was not valid.Trump said that all he knew about the conspiracy theory is that "they are very much against pedophilia" and agree with that.Guthrie also asked Trump about a tweet he recently retweeted about the conspiracy that former president Barack Obama and Biden "had SEAL Team 6 killed" and that Osama bin Laden's death was a hoax."I know nothing about it," Trump said. "That was a retweet — that was an opinion of somebody. And that was a retweet. I'll put it out there. People can decide for themselves." "I don't get that," Guthrie responded. "You're the President. You're not like someone's crazy uncle who can retweet whatever."TaxesDuring his hour-long town hall, Trump confirmed that he might owe 0 million personally but did not state to whom he owes the debt. He added that he didn't owe any money to Russia or to "sinister people."" 0 million is a peanut," Trump said during his town hall.Trump added that he is currently being audited and that the IRS mistreats him.""I'm treated very badly by the IRS," Trump said. "They treat me very, very badly. You have people in there from previous administrations. They treat me very badly. But we're under audit. It's very routine in many ways. But we're under audit. They like to change the game, change the rules, do everything." 3338

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) Poway's mayor is responding to critics who are slamming him for how he handled the recent boil water advisory. Nearly 200 businesses were forced to close for six days over fears that the water might have been contaminated during recent storms. Tuesday morning, a group calling itself "The East County Coalition for Clean Water" held a news conference at Lake Poway. The members are from the Helix and Lakeside Water Districts, and one is from the San Diego County Water Authority. The regional water officials said they'd been getting calls from constituents worried about their water supply, which was not affected by the boil water advisory. "The mishandling of the Poway contamination incident erodes the confidence of the public of all the water boards," said Lakeside Water District Member Frank Hilliker, who said he was speaking as a private citizen and not in an official capacity.Hilliker said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus was "asleep at the wheel." "The buck stops with the mayor of Poway, and he was slow to react," said Hilliker. Hilliker also said it was irresponsible for the mayor to say he was continuing to drink the water before testing was complete.Mayor Vaus said he wouldn't do anything differently. "I told people I was drinking water. I did drink the water. I gave it to my pets, cause I knew and I repeatedly said, all of our tests were fine. Sacramento was way behind Poway in getting their clearances," said Mayor Vaus. The mayor said the criticism has more to do with dirty politics than dirty water. "These are a bunch of elected's doing the dirty work for a desperate and disgraced candidate for county supervisor," said Vaus. The mayor is referring to former state Senator Joel Anderson, who is running against Vaus in the race for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. "All 4 or 5 people who were listed on the press release are supporting my opponent in the county supervisor race, an opponent who is in desperate straights according to the polling," said Vaus. When reporters asked Hilliker if he was supporting Anderson, he insisted the news conference was about public safety."How is that relevant to public safety? Again, we're talking about public safety and clean water," said Hilliker. The group also blamed the mayor for not maintaining equipment. Last week, a state official indicated that part of the system was not in compliance with state regulations. "There was a comment in the media from someone with the State Water Quality Control Board saying something or other was wrong with our set up. Well, our set up has been the same for 50 years. We've maintained it impeccably, he signed off on it a few months ago, nothing has changed since then," said Mayor Vaus. The mayor said the city would submit an incident report to the state and make any necessary repairs.Meanwhile, the Poway Chamber of Commerce is launching restaurant month until January 10th in an attempt to help the businesses. 2963

President Donald Trump is set to hold his first news conference of the week, slated to start at today 5:30 p.m. ET.Trump has been on the campaign trail this week, making stops in Wisconsin and Minnesota on Monday followed by a visit to Arizona on Tuesday. Meanwhile this week, the Democrats have been holding their quadrennial national convention virtually.Trump will likely field questions about the convention, which has featured two former presidents – Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter – and will features Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama this evening. Clinton made scathing response against Trump, decrying the current president's response to the coronavirus. The president is also expected to address the latest slimmed down stimulus proposal that Senate Republicans are considering. The Senate is weighing a much smaller stimulus plan that would direct funds toward small businesses and the unemployed. The plan does not include a second round of stimulus checks, which up until recently, had broad agreement among Senate Republicans, House Democrats and the White House. 1081
