ATLANTA, Ga. – For more than six decades, Manuel’s Tavern has been the spot in Atlanta for people who love politics.“The quintessential political bar,” said Angelo Fuster, who knew the tavern’s original owner, Manuel Maloof, who got into politics himself decades ago. “Every election, we've been here. Kelly Loeffler faces Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock.“For all those Georgians who are tired of the campaign ads, of their mailboxes being flooded with advertisements from campaigns as well -- get used to it,” said Bernard Fraga, an associate professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta.Fraga said both major political parties will be throwing their efforts into the two Senate races.“We're gonna have another two months of both sides, the Democratic and Republican candidates, but also the national parties, nonprofit organizations, mobilization groups, working their hardest to make sure that their campaigns win and that voters are active and engaged,” Fraga said.Craig Eberhart is with Men of Higher Standards, a nonpartisan, African American men’s group, focusing on voter registration in Georgia.“It’s gonna be bananas,” Eberhart said.People who live in Georgia can still register to vote through the first week of December. As the number of coronavirus cases continues to climb around the world and disrupts the travel industry, Princess Cruises has announced cancellation of early 2021 trips.“Due to restrictions and limitations with border and port access determined by government and health authorities and the continued uncertainty of airline travel,” Princess Cruises canceled about 30 voyages on two ships.The Island Princess, which stopped at ports around the world, and Pacific Princess, that sailed around South America and Australia, will not set sail until at least April, according to a release from the company.The cancelled voyages include a 111-day around-the-world from Los Angeles.Princess Cruises, which is owned by Carnival, is offering refunds or credit for a future cruise.Carnival Cruises has also canceled some 2021 voyages, and likely won’t return to full capacity until 2022.The cruise company is facing legal action for their handling of passengers when the coronavirus pandemic started this spring. Two lawsuits allege Princess Cruises did not act fast enough to impose quarantines when cases were discovered.When the lawsuits were filed in June, Princess Cruises told USA Today “our response throughout this process has focused on the well-being of our guests and crew within the parameters dictated to us by the government agencies involved and the evolving medical understanding of this new illness.” 1414

At Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy, Battalion 146 recently went through some intense rescue scenarios.“Help a brother out. Come on,” shouted an instructor.The person responsible for training the future firefighters is academy coordinator Andy Densmore, who has been in this industry for almost four decades and is retiring at the end of this year.“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “We have to make the change.”Changes due to COVID-19.Since the pandemic hit, academy class sizes have been cut by a third, cadets are screened before they enter the facilities, they socially distance themselves once they’re in and wear masks when they’re not in face pieces.“The nice part is we asked these kids for their commitment the first day that we meet them and we said, ‘there’s only one variable in this entire program and it’s you,’” Densmore said.As Densmore’s career comes to a close during this crisis, Camila Schafer, class president of Battalion 146, is just starting hers.“Whether it’s a pandemic, it’s a fire, it’s a surf rescue, we’ll answer that call,” she said.Schafer says instructors can control all aspects of a cadet’s day while on campus but once they leave the academy, however, cadets are committed to an individual responsibility.“On weekends, we’re studying. we’re hitting the books,” she said. “We’re making sure that we’re not out there putting our battalion in jeopardy and possibly getting this virus.”Employment of firefighters is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistcs.While this fire academy is training with new challenges, Densmore believes smaller class sizes could make cadets like Schafer better prepared than firefighters of the past.“We don’t graduate mediocre,” he said. “Our standards are really, really high. The high-tech camera is normally used for commercial long-line fishing, but in this situation, it worked quite nicely."We needed something that could be thrown from the side of a boat, and would continue operating reliably under extreme pressure in the pitch black for long periods of time," said Australian Antarctic Division program leader Dr. Dirk Welsford. "The cameras are providing important information about areas of sea floor that can withstand this type of fishing, and sensitive areas that should be avoided."The large area off the coast of East Antarctica, which is covered with cold-water corals and penguin foraging grounds, has been the focus of a bid to create a protection area — known as the Antarctic Conservation Zone.Now, researchers are hoping that the new technology that captured the rare footage can help the creation of that area.The proposal for protection has previously been endorsed by the commission's scientific committee three times, but China and Russia have blocked the proposal each year, according to a report in Naturer. 1592
