SCRIPPS RANCH, Calif. (KGTV) - A proposal to sell Alliant International University's land in Scripps Ranch has neighbors worried.Thursday, the San Diego Planning Commission will hear a proposal to re-zone 72 acres of land at the University to be used for low-to-medium residential. That would allow up to 700 homes to be built on the site. To re-zone, the Scripps Ranch Community Plan will need to be amended. The vote Thursday will be to begin the amendment process.People who live nearby say adding hundreds of homes would be a nightmare for traffic and a disaster for wildfire evacuations."We're not opposed to development, but not for development's sake," says Kristin Rayder, the President of the Scripps Ranch Fire Safety Council. "It has to be safe."Rayder and the Council voted to tell the Planning Commission not to approve change to the Community Plan. So did the Scripps Ranch Planning Group.They say Pomerado Road can't handle the extra traffic, neither can the Avenue of the Americas, which leads to the University and is shared by Thurgood Marshall Middle School."If you come out here in the morning on a school day, you see what the chaos is on this narrow little road here and why it would be unacceptable to have another thousand cars a day on this small road that goes right in front of the school with no sidewalks," says Wally Wulfeck, the Planning Group Chair.They're also worried about what could happen if a wildfire ever threatens the area.People who live nearby, like Wulfeck and Rayder, still have vivid memories of the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire. In both fires, the areas around Pomerado Road had to be evacuated."We were leaving our home and looking to the right, I saw a wall of fire," says Rayder. "That was Pomerado Road. I'll never forget that look.""My house was one of the last to burn," says Wulfeck. "I watched it on TV."In an email to 10News, the Alliant University Foundation, which owns the land, says the school will be moving to a new campus in the coming years, and they're still in the early stages of the plan to sell the land."The university is still leasing a portion of the property and buildings and will likely be a tenant for a few more years under the current agreements. The foundation which owns the property placed it on the market in January of 2018 and entered into an agreement with an interested party in the fall of last year. The proposed use of the land is planned by the buyer in such cases."10News has learned that KB Home is the "interested party" mentioned in the email. SANTEE, Calif (KGTV) - Edgemore Hospital celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its current facility Wednesday, a milestone in a dramatic turnaround from a reputation that almost led to its closure."You had a hospital that as basically built in the 1920's," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said in an interview with 10News. "You had a hospital that at times had no air conditioning on days where it was 100 degrees...required a lot of maintenance, held together with bubble gum and baling wire, basically.""It was like a rundown hotel with open windows and animals running around," said patient Glenn Higgins, who spent two years in the old facility. "The nurses were scared to go to certain areas because they said there were ghosts from a lot of people dying."Costs of renovation or replacement were so steep, the County Board of Supervisors almost decided to close Edgemoor and not replace it. However, after being on the verge of making that decision, the Board instead relented and approved the 9 million to build the current facility in Santee.Higgins says that while Edgemoor always had a great staff, the new building has made a big difference in the quality of care. "I thank the lord that I'm here, because I know what it's like out there."In a recent article, Newsweek named Edgemoor the best nursing home of its kind in California, and among the best in the nation."If you take good care of the people in the community who are the most vulnerable, that's what's really important in life," Jacob said. Seattle police have moved in to break up the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) after Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order early Wednesday morning declaring the gathering illegal.According to the Seattle Times and KOMO-TV, about a dozen protesters were arrested Wednesday morning as police ordered those present to leave the area.Demonstrators have occupied the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle for about three weeks. The protesters moved in earlier this month after police abandoned the department's East Precinct — which is located in the neighborhood — over fears of riots.While the occupation was largely peaceful for several weeks, the area has seen four shootings since June 20, some of them deadly.The protests began in the wake of the death of George Floyd, and were part of a nationwide protest movement against systemic racism and police brutality.Last month, CHOP leadership released a list of demands calling for the abolishment of the Seattle Police Department, a retrial for all people of color serving prison sentences for violent crime and the de-gentrification of the city, among other demands. 1138
Sears has won some more time to save itself. But not a lot more time.At a bankruptcy court hearing Thursday, Judge Robert Drain approved Sears' plan to auction off about 500 stores. The auction is central to the company's mission to remain in business. Sears intends to use funds from the sale for its operations, and it will pay rent to the stores' buyers so they can stay open.A committee of Sears' creditors had objected to the plan and argued that the company should immediately start the process of going out of business to limit its ongoing losses.Judge Drain said he will hold another hearing a week before Christmas to consider whether to go ahead with Sears' effort to stay in business or start the process to close all its remaining stores. (KGTV) — Santee voters this November will weigh in on two measures that deal with limits on serving as a City Council member or as Mayor.Measure Q and R each intend to address term limits on City Council and Mayoral positions in the city of Santee, however, they each take a different approach to limit how long someone can serve.The text of Measure Q reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure Q: "Shall the measure amending the Santee Municipal Code to require that no person shall serve as an 'Elected Official,' defined to include the offices of Mayor and Member of the City Council, for more than twelve years, or three terms, whichever is less, with any portion of term, whether by election or appointment, counting as a full term, be adopted?"Measure Q would not allow anyone to serve as either Mayor or a City Council member, or any combination of those positions, for more than 12 years, or three four-year terms, with any portion of a term counting as a full term.The competing measure, Measure R, reads as follows:City of Santee - Measure R: "Shall an ordinance amending the Santee Municipal Code to establish a three-term lifetime limit on City Council service and a separate two-term lifetime limit on Mayoral service, be adopted?"In other words, no one can serve as Mayor for more than two, four-year terms and, separately and in addition, as a City Council member for three, four-year terms, regardless of the district a person represented.
