More than 100 people die from opioid overdoses every day. Amid the opioid crisis, a newly FDA-approved opioid called Dsuvia could soon be hitting the market, and it’s said to be more powerful than morphine and fentanyl.Dsuvia was designed, in part, to help soldiers on the battlefield.For Navy veteran Rich Shock, a back injury turned out to be far worse than anything he experienced in Iraq and Iran. “At first, started with Vicodin and then it became Norco, and then they doubled the dose of Norco, and then it became Norco with Oxycontin,” describes Shock of his prescribed medication. As his tolerance and dosage got higher, he started doctor shopping until they cut him off. That's when a friend offered him heroin. “He's like, ‘I'm telling you. It's cheaper. It's easier to find and it lasts longer.’ And he was right. He was absolutely right,” says Shock. The addiction cost him everything, including his job, his family and his home. He said he had one thought. “How did I get this bad? Like, how did I end up here? After everything. You know I have a wife and a family and a good job,” Shock says. Veterans are twice as likely to suffer from opioid addiction, according to a United States Department of Veterans Affairs health system study. That's one reason behind the outrage over the FDA’s approval of the new, powerful painkiller.Dsuvia is 1,000 times more potent than morphine and 10 times more than fentanyl. It's restricted for use only in battlefields and emergency rooms for patients suffering tremendous pain from traumatic injuries.Even still, the chairman of the committee that reviewed the drug, did not want it approved for fears it will be abused. “I think that this the approval of this drug represents a failure of their most fundamental duties, and I think the veterans are [going to] pay for it with their lives,” says Brenton Huston, with Volunteers of America Veteran Support and Services. Hutson is a Marine who works with veterans.“There are already other drugs out there, less addictive, less potent that are also taken that way,” Hutson says. “So, there's really just no need for it.”Shock fought his way out of addiction, but he fears what could happen with a much more powerful drug. “With the opiate problem we have right now, why would you want to manufacture a drug that stronger? It doesn't make any sense to me,” Shock says. To help prevent abuse, the FDA is putting tight restrictions on Dsuvia. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told senators Friday that the cost-cutting fixes he has made to the U.S. Postal Service transportation system were designed to improve service."The only change I made, ma'am, was the trucks leave on time," said Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Friday.But an investigation by Scripps station WTVF in Nashville found that, at the same time that DeJoy was testifying, the Postal Service was paying for an empty truck to drive from Nashville to Illinois.It turns out that DeJoy's changes have led to empty postal trucks being run all over the country.Testifying before a U.S. Senate committee Friday, DeJoy defended his cost-cutting measures, specifically highlighting cuts that targeted transportation issues within the Postal Service.Those cuts require postal trucks to leave sorting facilities by a specific time each day and are intended to reduce expenses related to overtime and extra trips.But postal workers in Nashville say DeJoy's new mandate is not practical and is having unintended consequences."Trucks leave empty," said Joe Jolley, a postal employee with the postal workers union in Nashville. "They leave completely empty. We pay a truck to travel to Memphis, a 53-foot truck with no mail on it."Piles of mail that, postal workers say, missed their intended transportsJolley said DeJoy's new policy does not allow a truck to be held up for even five minutes so it can be loaded with mail. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots.
