There was a mixture of excitement and nervousness Monday, as nearly 600 spellers kicked off the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee with a test. The preliminary test is made up of 12 spelling words and 14 vocabulary words.“I think it was fun, but also stressful in a way because it was difficult,” says speller Tommy Cherry of Florida.Cherry says he’s happy with how he did. His friend, Arik Karim, feels the same.“I think I learned a lot from it,” Karim, who is also from Florida, says.The friends help each other study. “There's just going to be a lot going on, so sometimes I think it's good to like take a break and, you know, just get to study,” says Karim.The two met at last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, but they hadn’t seen each other since. They were able to connect at this year’s competition. “I like socializing with a lot of people who I have a lot in common with,” Cherry says.They’re looking forward to hitting the stage again.“I feel pretty confident, considering that, yes, we do have a list that we study from, and I think I'm well acquainted with the words that we receive,” Karim says.The spellers will take the stage Tuesday for the second round of preliminaries. Three American tourists, including a married couple, drowned in Turks and Caicos, the group of islands southeast of the Bahamas, authorities and local reports said.Two girls survived what authorities called a "very human and terrible tragedy" in the waters off scenic Bambarra Beach in Middle Caicos on Monday. He says you also need to be cautious of who you choose to store data with because there’s a possibility for any company to be breached.“So if you’re saying ‘save my credit card information', that is a risk that you’re taking for that convenience and it might not be worth it,” Hayes said.The internet has made it so people can fall victim to cybersecurity attacks in everyday life, but if more people understand the motivations and methods scammers are using, cybersecurity attacks might be less successful.So why not use a game to help educate? Any unsolicited emails should be ignored, and if something seems like too good of a deal, make sure to use a critical eye and do your research. Otherwise, you may never receive what you buy, or your personal information could be sold.“The holidays are a time when your guard is down. You’re kind of looking at the joy of the world and buying gifts and connecting with family. And that unfortunately is also a really vulnerable time for people to not pay attention to some of the smaller details,” Brubaker said.  3343
