A woman in Illinois is warning others about the dangers of gel manicures claiming that the UV lamps at the nail salon gave her cancer.Karolina Jasko, 20, told WFLD that she was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. Jasko says that her doctor said it was most likely caused by getting her nails done at the nail salon. Specifically, Jasko claims the cancer was caused by the lamp that emits UVA rays to cure gel manicures.According to an unrelated report published by the American Academy?of Dermatology, UV exposure during gel manicures should be a concern for everyone, but especially for people who are highly sensitive to UV light. Chris G. Adigun, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders, says that although the UVA rays don’t burn the skin like UVB rays, they do penetrate the skin to damage DNA and collagen, which can lead to premature aging and may increase skin cancer risk. Dr. Adigun says that a common misconception people believe is that LED curing lamps provide a safer option at nail salons, however, those lamps also emit UVA light.“The UV dose that you receive during a gel manicure is brief, but it’s intense,” Dr. Adigun says. “Over time, this intense exposure can add up to cause skin damage.”In order to protect your skin, doctors urge customers that get gel manicures quite frequently to wear YouVeeShield. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A Frost Advisory was issued for San Diego County Valleys, prompting three key preparations to protect your pets, pipes and plants. The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, in cities including Escondido, El Cajon, San Marcos, La Mesa, Santee, and Poway.Ways to protect your plants is wrapping them before sundown, to retain heat, and watering trunks of trees with warm water the next morning.Wrapping pipes in towels to retain heat keeps them from freezing. In areas that see a hard freeze, leaving the faucet dripping overnight is one way to keep the pipes from freezing.Always remember to bring pets indoors. If you have a community cat, they do need shelter. The Humane Society explains what you can do to help. 774

A White House aide has admitted that a document that was released Tuesday that claimed that the Trump administration had ended the COVID-19 pandemic was "poorly worded."According to CNN, White House communications director Alyssa Farah clarified Wednesday that President Donald Trump does not believe the pandemic is over."The intent was to say that it is our goal to end the virus," Farah said, according to CNN. 421

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - When students in one East County school district start their school year, they may have the option to be in a learning pod, organized by the district. When Gov. Newsom's orders pointed to distance learning for local schools, Alpine Union School District's superintendent, Rich Newman, says the feedback from parents came quickly. Though the district took pride in their virtual classes, parents were worried."Parents had deep feelings of concern for the future of their children and their potential learning loss from distance learning," said Newman. Those specific concerns are familiar ones: access to computers and internet access, students' social isolation and distractions, and parents' work schedules. So officials in the school district, which includes nearly 1,700 students from pre-K to 8th grade, came up with a plan."We are replicating the normal school day our students would normally be in," said Newman.Newman says they'll be offering up space for free at schools, from gyms and classrooms to outdoor spaces for 12-student learning pods. Each pod will be supervised by one parent every day. The parents would divvy out their shifts within the group."Parents have to fill out a facilities use agreement, just like a sports league ... that would allow them to go on campus. They'll have to sign a waiver," said Newman. The district won't be just providing space. Students will have access to computers and tutors, both in-person and online. Newman says the pods will follow state COVID-19 guidelines, including social distancing and mandatory masks for students in the 3rd grade and higher."This allows our parents to return to work, and know that their child has a safe to be and support for their distance learning," said Newman. The district also plans to expand its current before-and-after-school care into a 10-and-a-half hour day, with similar learning pods. Between the two programs, they hope to reach 100% of families needing help."We hope to leave our students and parents with a sense of normalcy ... and ensure there will be no loss of learning ... So far, the response has been overwhelming," said Newman.Class is set to begin August 24.Newman says the district has consulted with attorneys who say the district's plans do fall within state guidelines. In a statement, a county spokesperson says, "Our current understanding is that this type of program would not be allowed under current state guidance. However, we are seeking clarity from the State on this issue." 2520

After a gunshot wound to the back paralyzed him, Javier Flores turned his anger into art.“For me it’s a meditative process,” he said. “It’s a way I can focus something bigger than myself.”Learning to overcome his own obstacles, Flores is now fighting for more disability rights around the world.“As an artist, I feel it’s art job to provoke and insight dialogue and conversation,” he said.Conversation about the United States' failure to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an international human rights treaty intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.“I’m disabled and so for me it’s a slap in the face,” Flores said. “I felt like it was an injustice and so it’s one of the things I wanted to carry out through the aesthetics of cubism.”With help from his art students at Access Gallery, Flores created a piece titled “Really?” in an attempt to bring awareness to his fight.“The image is an adaptation of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica,” Flores said of the artwork. “Instead of the horse, there’s a seeing eye dog. There’s people of different disabilities and abilities represented.”Now his artwork is on display at an unusual gallery: a pizza shop“It’s not just creating art but creating economic opportunity for artists with disabilities,” said Chris Donato of Pizzeria Locale. This Denver-based pizzeria recently printed Flores’ artwork on its pizza boxes.“It’s a way to kind of highlight the 30th anniversary (of the Americans with Disabilities Act) and hopefully bring attention to the cause,” Donato said.Thirty years after the ADA was signed, Pizzeria Locale is now donating 33% of its revenue to Access Gallery during a fundraiser.“Currently, we have three locations so it’s a pretty good chunk of change we hope,” Donato said.Change that Flores says can help inspire art, emotion and more help for those living with disabilities. 1902
