CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A Chula Vista homeowner encountered an intruder as she was getting dressed in her bedroom, before giving chase.Russell Buckley was alerted to his Ring doorbell video around 6:45 a.m. Friday. A person in a red hoodie was lurking near the front door of his home off Otay Lakes Road, while Buckley was out of town on business."Tried to text my wife to let her know someone was in front of my house," said Buckley.About 25 minutes later, he got another alert. The video showed his wife screaming, as she chased that same man across their lawn."Absolute panic," said Buckley. He phoned his wife Victoria and learned what happened. She was in her bedroom getting dressed while their housekeeper was working in the house. His wife had just put on her shoes when the door opened. A young man with a red hoodie walked in. "She screamed. He screamed and turned around and ran back down the stairs," said Buckley. As he ran, her fear turned into rage."How dare you come into my home ... She has a protective instinct," said Buckley. His petite, 52-year-old wife - all of five feet tall - gave chase."From what I'm told, he dove across the counter and out the window," said Buckley.Buckley showed us a shattered kitchen window, which he says was both the entry and exit point. He says his wife ran out the front door and sprinted toward the intruder, screaming."At one point, she's able to grab him," said Buckley. She tugged at a pillowcase he was holding, stuffed with her daughter's jewelry, but the man got away and into a getaway car - a silver sedan. Buckley is grateful his wife was not hurt, fand still shaking his head over her leap into action."Told her it wasn't the wisest decision, but I'm very proud of her. It was a fight or flight instinct, and more of a fight for her," said Buckley. Buckley says among the items stolen: a gold Chilean communion medallion in his wife's family for more than a century. Police told the Buckleys four young men were recorded in the neighborhood stealing license plates right before the break-in. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2137

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista boxer Andrea Medina has a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream before she even turns 21.Monday, she'll begin fighting in the Team USA Olypmic Team Trials for boxing, with a chance to go to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo."I feel like this is my time," she says. "It's what I've been working for. It's exciting. I'm ready."Medina has been boxing since she was 5 years old. She's already won 16 National Championships. At the trials, she'll face 7 other women vying for two spots at the Team USA training center in Colorado Springs."I've already fought half of them," she says of the competition. "And I've sparred against the other half. So I know who I'm going up against."Medina's father, Juan, is a former boxer and serves as her trainer. He says she's the favorite to advance out of the double-elimination tournament."I'm biased, but if I were to put a percentage on it, I'd say we have a high 90's percent chance," he says.He also says he's proud of the way his daughter has dedicated her life to the sport and the pursuit of her dream."You have to prioritize. You can't chose other things over boxing," he says. "Boxing is a jealous sport. So you have to pretty much surrender yourself to the sport. She made that choice and now we're here.'In addition to her boxing, Medina is also a full-time student at San Diego State. She's majoring in Criminal Justice. She says representing San Diego and her country in the Olympics would mean "everything.""This has been my dream since I was 8 years old and started competing," she says. "I love it. I don't think I could live without it." 1632

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- While most students in San Diego County are distance learning, there are some schools that are doing a combination of virtual and in-person learning. One school in the South Bay is working with a hybrid system that makes sure all students get the same learning opportunities.St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista welcomed students back on campus a month ago. To keep class sizes small and following state guidelines, they split the older graders into separate classrooms. But not everyone returned to campus, as dozens of families chose to stay at home and do distance learning. So, the school put together a hybrid system that allows all students to participate in real time teaching no matter where they are. With the use of technology, the teacher can see the students at home and the students that are in both classrooms.Sixth-grade teacher Michael Hart said with the help of Zoom, a camera, and classroom speakers, he can engage all students in daily lessons.“I have a Logitech camera that tracks me so it will follow me around the classroom or if I’m behind my desk. It’s just a simple remote,” Hart said.He also uses an app that makes sure every student is called upon equally, so they can all participate in class discussions.Sixth-grader Zachary Lastrella told ABC 10News, “If Mr. Hart asks us a question either in here or in the Zoom or in the other room, then we can answer the question.”As for tests, all of the students complete those using their laptops via Google Forms.Hart added, “It’s able to randomize the questions, whether it’s multiple choice or fill in the blanks or an essay response, and it does come down to academic honesty.”Students say physically their “classrooms” may be different now, but the important elements are still there.Devraaj Jani, a sixth grade students, said, “We’re still in one class, and we’re still together as one.” 1908

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Police say they rescued a kidnapping victim this week, after the man was able to signal for help through a car's cracked window as the suspect tasked with guarding him slept.Sunday night, a 36-year-old man was attacked by two men and thrown into a pick-up truck while walking to his car from a restaurant in the 600 block of Broadway, Chula Vista Police said.Police said the suspects took the victim to a second location near Sequoia St. and Presidio Point Ct. and handed him off to a third suspect waiting in a parked car. While the suspect in the front seat was supposed to be watching the victim in the backseat, he fell asleep instead, police say.Police say that's when the victim was able to signal for help, waving a white cloth out of a slightly cracked open window in the backseat. A passerby spotted the victim flagging for help at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and called police.Police arrived and rescued the man and arrested the sleeping guard. That's when the suspected pick-up originally used to abduct the victim drove past, police said. Police say they arrested one of the two men inside the truck who they believe to have been involved with Sunday's incident.Police are still looking for a third suspect. The motive behind the abduction remains unclear, police said, but it didn't appear the victim knew the kidnappers. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the ordeal, police added. 1470
