SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents arrested five people in connection with a human smuggling incident, including one man convicted of being a sexual predator.A vehicle traveling through a temporary immigration checkpoint in Potrero failed to stop at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, before agents stopped the vehicle several yards past the checkpoint.Agents say five males in the vehicle were questioned. Three passengers in the vehicle's backseat said they were from Mexico but had no U.S. documentation, according to CBP. The driver and front seat passenger claimed to be from the U.S.The driver and front passenger were arrested on suspicion of smuggling and the three other passengers were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally, CBP said. During a records check at a nearby station, agents learned one passenger, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was convicted in 2012 of kidnapping and rape of a minor in San Diego. He was sentenced to a seven-year prison term and removed from the U.S.“I am proud of the great work agents demonstrated in arresting this known child predator,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “Their actions help keep our communities safer.”Both U.S. citizens face human smuggling charges and the previously deported Mexican man faces federal charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least two people suffered major burns in a boat fire off the coast of San Diego late Saturday night, according to Coast Guard officials.Two patients were critically injured and were flown from the boat by helicopter and have been transported to the hospital. The total number of patients at this time is unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011.  It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life.  They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Arson investigators Saturday were looking into multiple fires set within a three-mile radius of each other in Ocean Beach and Point Loma.The first fire was set at about 1 a.m. on Muir Ave. in Ocean Beach. Three more fires were set on Piedmont Dr. and Catalina Pl. in the Point Loma area, San Diego Fire-Resuce Department said.No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. Each fire was set in rubbish behind homes, according to SDFD. Due to the proximity and similarities between the small fires, fire officials said the fires were "suspicious" and arson investigators were looking at whether they were connected. No arrests have been made."The San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) is investigating several suspicious rubbish fires which occurred last night in the Point Loma and Ocean Beach communities.
