SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As hospitals across San Diego County receive boxes of Pfizer’s highly anticipated COVID-19 vaccine, Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) was the first to start vaccinating frontline healthcare workers.“It was exciting; it felt like a big moment. It kind of feels like it has this energy, of perhaps the beginning of the final chapter of what has felt like a long year for most of us,” said Lt. J.G. Catherine Senoyuit, a staff nurse in the Emergency Department at NMCSD.Senoyuit was the first to get the vaccine in her arm at NMCSD Tuesday afternoon.“It feels like I have an obligation to do everything I can to ensure I am immune, so I don’t pass on anything to my patients,” she said.Like many, Senoyuit was at first a little skeptical about a vaccine put out so quickly, but after doing much research, she said she was reassured it would be safe.“These companies that have developed this vaccine have put in a lot of work into ensuring and sharing the data to show people how hard they worked to make sure they rolled out this vaccine safely,” she said.After the injection, Senoyuit said she was told to look out for any adverse reactions similar to other vaccinations.“Like any vaccinations I ever received, I got a list of the potential adverse reactions which are pretty much the same as any other vaccination,” she explained. “I was held there a few minutes to watch me; I didn’t have any reaction. They told me what could happen, what to look out for, and what to come back and be seen for,” she said.A couple of hours after NMCSD, Rady Children’s Hospital also began vaccinating its most at-risk frontline personnel.“I think it’s a really important step for us to get to some kind of normalcy,” said Brittanee Randle, an Emergency Room nurse at Rady Children’s Hospital who was the first to get vaccinated there. “We’ve seen lots of businesses, people, and families be affected by this virus, and I think it’s important for us healthcare workers to take a stand and get the vaccine.”At this point, the vaccine is not mandatory at either hospital; those who get it will continue wearing masks and receive a second dose three weeks later.“This is going to be a long process to roll out, so we need to make sure we’re still really careful about wearing masks, social distancing, and following all the guidelines by the CDC,” said Senoyuit.Tuesday UC San Diego also received its first shipment of nearly 3,000 doses and is expected to vaccinate high-risk workers on Wednesday.A spokesperson for Palomar Health said they would also be picking up doses from the county Tuesday, and vaccines could be administered to staff as early as Wednesday.Scripps Health plans to start vaccinations for Tier 1 workers Thursday, and Tri-City Medical Center expects its first shipment sometime this week. 2821

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside in the San Diego area. Police say a father left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Police say the 8-year-old was able to call police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother had been kidnapped.Roughly 30 minutes later, Border Patrol detained the suspect trying to cross the border into Mexico.Police have since taken the woman into custody. 680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Witnesses say a woman was driving at least 100 mph before she crashed into a power pole in the Oak Park area and died early Sunday morning.The crash happened in the 2000 block of 54th Street around 1:30 a.m.According to witnesses, the woman was traveling at approximately 100 mph when she struck a curb, skidded out of control and hit a power pole.The 33-year-old became pinned inside the vehicle after the crash. Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut the woman out of the vehicle.The woman died at the scene due to her injuries. At this time, police say they don’t know whether or not drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 672

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across the country, there have been reports of racial discrimination against the Asian Pacific Islander community (API), including here in San Diego County.Erin Chew said she was wrapping up her grocery shopping trip in San Marcos when a man made eye contact with her and began speaking loudly about Asians."He just looked at me and started talking extremely loud to his partner or wife Looking at me saying Chinese people eat all this dirty stuff, eating bats and everything," Chew explained. No Asians allowed."An online reporting center called Stop AAPI Hate has been documenting the number of reported incidents against Asian Pacific Islanders across the country.As of April 29, it has received 1,711 reports, including 28 across San Diego County.The incidents range from verbal harassment and shunning, to physical assault.The San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SD API) Coalition is working with San Diego Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery to put a resolution in front of the entire city council that will address the racial discrimination locally.The resolution proposes that the city should document and report hate crimes through Stop AAPI Hate and work with SD API to use the reported information to create targeted education and provide resources to those affected personally.SD API also said the city council would encourage the city's Human Relations Commission to address and investigate reported incidents.The city council will vote to adopt the resolution on June 2. 2150
