A Navy SEAL pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of premeditated murder in the stabbing death of an injured ISIS fighter estimated to be 15 years old.Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher faces a slew of accusations connected to violations of military law while he was deployed to the Iraqi city of Mosul in 2017.Among the accusations against Gallagher are that he stabbed and killed a wounded person, shot at noncombatants, posed for a photo and performed his re-enlistment ceremony next to a corpse, according to a charge sheet 547

A suspect in arson fires at three historically black Louisiana churches is a law enforcement officer's son who may have been influenced by "black metal" music and "its associated history with church burnings," the state fire marshal said Thursday. The man was identified as Holden Matthews, 21, according to Gov. John Bel Edwards, who called the fires a reminder of "a very dark past of intimidation and fear.""I don't know what this young man's motive was, I don't know what was in his heart, but I can say it cannot be justified or rationalized," Edwards told reporters. "These were evil acts. But let me be clear about this, hate is not a Louisiana value."Matthews is charged with three counts of simple arson on a religious building, State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years. Matthews has no history of violence or prior arrests, officials said."We can now confirm all three of these fires are intentionally set and all three of these fires are related," Browning said. The motive is still under investigation, and federal officials are looking into whether the fires represent a hate crime."Information investigators have uncovered, and that Matthews has offered, suggests a possible connection with a genre of music called 'black metal' and its associated history with church burnings in other parts of the world, which have been documented in movies and books," Browning said. "Any questions as to the potential motives of hate are continuing to be vetted by federal authorities."Matthews is the son of a local sheriff's deputy, said St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz. He said he broke the news of Matthews' alleged involvement to the deputy, whom he described as one of his best friends."As we all know, Holden's father is an employee of mine, a fine man," Guidroz said. "He was shocked and hurt as any father would be ... He was in terrible shape."St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre burned on March 26, followed by Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and, two days later, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in the same town.Officials are also investigating a fourth, smaller fire on March 31 at the predominantly white Vivian United Pentecostal Church in Caddo Parish, more than 200 miles north of St. Landry. The blaze was intentionally set. Officials said Thursday they had no evidence linking the Caddo fire to the other three. The FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigations. A new reported loophole in the federal financial aid process is raising concerns about fairness. According to multiple reports, some parents from Illinois are giving up guardianship of their child before they go to college. It gives the student “independent status,” which can help them qualify for more student debt since their parents’ income isn’t considered.Emily Goodman, from the Partnership for College Completion, says she’s disappointed, but she’s not surprised. Goodman helps kids from low-income backgrounds finish college.“They’re really taking away opportunity for our low-income students in our state who may be the only access to college,” she says. “The only pathway to college is through state financial aid.”The reports say more than 40 families in question came from some of the wealthiest places in Illinois: Lake County.State Representative La Shawn Ford is working to close the loophole to make the system fairer. “These parents that really have the ability to pay are robbing the dreams of certain families and their kids the ability to go to college,” Ford says.He says the practice isn’t technically illegal, so any impactful change would have to happen on the federal level. He plans to crack down on private college admission businesses that allegedly pointed parents to this practice.“They can have some type of restrictions on how they guide and drive people to these types of immoral behaviors," Rep. Ford says. But others aren’t as confident that new regulations are the solution.Justin Draeger is one of them. He works for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators."What we don't want is an overcorrection that then makes it really difficult, if not impossible, for students who are in legitimate legal guardianships to qualify for financial aid,” says Draeger.Rep. Ford argues the loophole only exposes a bigger issue.“If people have to go through measures to lie cheat and rob others of opportunities to go to college,” Ford says, “college is not affordable." 2027
