CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — The Sweetwater Union High School District will allow almost 300 employees to retire early, to balance a budget tens of millions of dollars in the red. "It was in our best interest to work with the district,” President Gene Chavira of the Sweetwater Education Association said. The teachers’ union president said this is part of the district’s "Budget Solutions Plan." They first added two furlough days to all staff this school year. In November, the Board of Trustees also agreed to offer employees who are 50 years or older and have worked for the district for at least 10 years, the option to resign then retire from the district. Eligible staff members were given two options for bonuses: Leave at the end of the year (December 2018) to receive 85 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years; or leave at the end of the school year (June 2019) to receive 60 percent of their annual salary, spread over a given number of years. At the last union election, Chavira said 87 percent of the union members voted for the district’s plan.By Wednesday’s deadline, nearly 300 employees signed up for the early retirement package. One hundred forty-four are teachers, and the rest are either school staff or management. Of the 144 teachers, 94 of them have chosen to leave in December 2018. While some voiced the concern of teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, Chavira said the district employs many capable teachers who are qualified.“If one your teachers was the teacher that left, then someone else is going to take it. And in most cases, it's someone that's already there, who will assume those classes,” Chavira said. While the hope is the change from a seasoned to a potentially less-experienced teacher in the middle of the school year will not affect student success, the district said the finances made sense. According to the current salary schedule, veteran teachers get paid as much as 8,000 a year, compared to new hires at ,000. "In the long run, it's a savings,” Chavira said. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A new support group in the South Bay hopes to fill a gap, serving children whose loved ones have been diagnosed with cancer. The group was created by siblings Sophia and Vincent Epley, ages 13 and 11. Last year the two found themselves facing a heartbreaking reality when both parents were diagnosed with cancer. Sophia and Vincent wanted to create a safe place where kids can ask questions and meet others going through similar situations. The Children and Family Cancer Support Group is led by clinical social worker Cara Fairfax and is open to all families.Details: 613

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire at an apartment in downtown Chula Vista sent two children to a hospital early Saturday, authorities said.Firefighters responded at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of a fire at an apartment above a business in the 300 block of Third Avenue, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Harry Muns said.Two people were reportedly walking by the home when they saw smoke and flames and rushed to wake everyone.Smoke was visible from the back of the building upon arrival, Muns said. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and they found a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy inside the unit where the fire began.The two were given medical treatment for smoke-related injuries.Five people were displaced by the fire -- including three from adjacent units, Muns said. 796
