SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Hundreds of thousands of San Diegans are expected to cast their ballots in person today, Election Day, with over 1 million ballots already received.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters said more than 1.1 million ballots have been received and nearly 60,000 residents have voted early in-person as of Monday, well more than double when compared to this point in the 2016 presidential election.Of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county, 1,114,627 had already turned in their ballots as of election eve. In the 2018 and 2014 Gubernatorial Elections, just 66% and 45% -- respectively -- of the electorate voted.During the March primary, about 1,600 polling locations were open to the public. The COVID-19 pandemic caused that number to shrink considerably. Even so, more than 4,000 poll workers will manage locations such as SDSU's Viejas Arena, the San Diego Convention Center, Rincon and Sycuan tribal halls and the Walnut Grove Park Red Barn in an Marcos. Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies will be provided to staffers so they can conduct the election process safely.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance.Locations of vote centers were chosen and configured to allow for queuing and voting while maintaining six feet of social distance. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages will kick off its first housing project of the year Tuesday at the future site of 82 affordable housing units.The project will convert an old E-Z 8 Motel at 1010 Outer Road into the housing complex for homeless residents. The project's kick-off ceremony will include a name dedication for its community funders and a 17-feet-tall banner unraveled from the building's top balcony, reading "Hope Lives Here."The city of San Diego plans to open a similar facility nearby in the Egger Highlands area by refitting a Super 8 motel that was the site of regular drug use and prostitution. The facility will include 82 beds and counseling for low-level drug offenders, many of whom are currently homeless. The California Coastal Commission voted to allow the project to move forward last month.Father Joe's Villages' ceremony will include remarks by president and CEO Deacon Jim Vargas and one of the organization's clients who has dealt with homelessness. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was killed Saturday when an SUV overturned and crashed into a tree on the Sea World Drive on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol said.The accident happened about 9 a.m. when a white Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV, traveling at a high rate of speed according to one witness, overturned and hit a tree on the right shoulder of the Sea World Drive on-ramp, according to CHP Officer Salvador Castro.Units from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department were also on the scene, near the Tecolote Canyon Natural Park and Nature Center.The CHP had no immediate information on the identity of the victim. Castro said nobody else was in the SUV at the time of the crash.Traffic on Sea World Drive and northbound I-5 was reported to be slowing. The CHP will investigate the cause of the accident. 837

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Rancho Pe?asquitos elementary school was placed on a brief lockdown Tuesday morning as officers searched the area for a suspect wanted on an unspecified felony warrant. Rolling Hills Elementary School, on Pe?asquitos Drive west of Interstate 15, was placed on lockdown around 9 a.m. as police searched for the suspect along Avenida Montuosa, a street off Del Diablo Way just south of the school, according to San Diego police. Around 10 a.m., police called off the search and the lockdown was lifted, SDPD public-affairs officer Billy Hernandez said. Police did not specify the type of felony warrant or release a description of the suspect. 669
