Over the years, Arizona has become a hot spot for transplants from across the country, especially California, a largely Democratic-leaning state. About 60,000 Californians moved to Arizona in 3017 alone, according to Census Bureau data. Then there’s also Arizona’s growing Hispanic population.“The increasing Latino Latina population in this state that happens to be Democratic leaning and identify as Democrats,” Hoekstra said. And then there’s the young people.“The universities are huge and growing and the students seem to be more active.”That’s a change from the new residents Arizona is often known for attracting. “It was a haven for retirees and snowbirds,” she said. “People who don't really want to pay taxes and moved here for those reasons.”State voter registration statistics show a record number of registered voters in Arizona as of November 2020, with just over 4.2 million. For comparison, the state’s population is closing in on 7.3 million people as of last year. Of the registered voters, 35.24% registered as Republican and 32.20% as Democrat. Getting those voters to turn out, is another battle.“Just the candidates themselves mobilize people one way or another, or demobilize some people maybe, too,” Hoekstra explained. COVID-19 is hitting them harder than many metropolitan hospitals as they deal with issues of lower staffing.According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, about 20% of our nation’s population lives in rural areas, yet less than 9% of our nation’s physicians practice there.Add on the fact that according to CDC data, COVID is killing rural Americans at a rate 3.5 times higher than those living in metropolitan areas, and this issue is affecting staff and patient care.“I’m very worried about rural health care because rural health care is teetering on the brink right now,” said Dr. Kurt Papenfus, an ER doctor at Keefe Memorial Hospital in rural Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. “There’s a darkness in this illness that I can’t say I’ve said about any other illness.In late October, Dr. Papenfus contracted COVID-19 as he was traveling back from the Northeast to visit his daughter.“I was very cognizant and was wearing a mask at all times, social distancing, and washing my hands,” Papenfus said. “But I remember having this thought on the train that this is a super-spreader event.”When he got home, Papenfus got tested and was confirmed positive for COVID-19. RUTHERFORD COUNTY, North Carolina — A teen who shot and killed her mother's boyfriend will not be charged, authorities said.The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said on Aug. 8, Chandra Nierman's 15-year-old daughter shot the 46-year-old male as he was attacking Nierman.Her other children, a 12-year-old son, and a 16-year-old daughter were there when the violence occurred. Sheriff's deputies said the man was threatening to "cut Nierman’s throat and kill everyone in the house."A release from authorities said:"Nierman’s twelve-year-old son retrieved a firearm and Nierman’s fifteen-year-old daughter took the gun from her brother and fired it twice, striking the deceased male in the chest. One of the fired rounds fragmented, grazing Nierman’s sixteen-year-old daughter in the leg."The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital and was released."Nierman suffered significant bruises and contusions from the assault," the release said.The investigation also revealed the deceased man had threatened Nierman several times previously, and four days before, he had assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize her."The investigation further revealed that the deceased male, who had multiple firearms in the house and frequently carried one on his person, was a convicted felon and had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement locally prior to the fatal shooting," the release said. "The deceased male has been positively identified as Steven Kelley, originally from Indiana."Based on the facts and the evidence, "it is the conclusion of the District Attorney’s Office that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed," the release states. 1903

Ron Jeremy, an adult film star, is charged with forcibly raping three women and sexually assaulting a fourth in separate incidents between 2014 and 2019.The Los Angeles County District Attorney announced the charges against 67-year-old Ronald Jeremy Hyatt Tuesday, and said three of the incidents happened at the same bar in West Hollywood.The District Attorney accuses Hyatt of sexually assaulting two women, ages 33 and 46, on separate occasions in 2017 at the bar. Then in 2019, the DA states Hyatt raped a 30-year-old woman at the same, unnamed bar.Hyatt is also accused of forcibly raping a 25-year-old woman in May 2014 at a home in West Hollywood.If Hyatt is convicted of these charges, he could face a maximum of 90 years to life in prison.In 2001, a documentary about his career and featuring Hyatt was released, “Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy.” He reportedly has more than 2,000 film credits as an adult film actor. 940
