SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract. The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period. The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community is coming together for the family of a San Diego mother of two who died this week while acting as a surrogate for another family.Michelle Reaves was helping a family have children of their own, according to a GoFundMe set up to help her family. It was her second surrogacy for the same family when complications arose and she died while giving birth, the campaign explained. The baby Reaves was carrying survived.Reaves leaves behind two children, Gage and Monroe, and her husband, Chris. The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign is hoping the community will "be there for Michelle’s family like they would for us.""I can’t even begin to imagine what her husband Chris and her two babies are going through so I want to start this page to help raise money for help with the kids, for Chris as they all adjust, funeral services, or anything at all to make it as easy as we can on them," wrote organizer Jaime Herwehe. "For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Michelle, she will always be known for the love she had for her family. Michelle has the best, most sarcastic, funny personality and always had you laughing."You hear about these things happening all of the time but never in your life imagine it will happen to you." 1277

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Technical problems at the state level impacted the California Department of Public Health's ability to accurately report COVID-19 cases."We are committed to the medium- and long-term to address these foundational data issues so that we can approve our importance and our customer service," California Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday.According to the state, the data system they use failed, and that led to inaccurate case numbers and case positivity rates. That failure prevented counties from having some of the data they need to monitor and respond to the virus in local communities, such as contact tracing. The state says that about two weeks ago, a server outage created a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system. At the same time, they realized they weren't getting data from one of the largest commercial reporting labs for about five days."Just thanking all Californians for their patience as we continue to make sure we're sharing this accurate COVID-19 data," said Secretary of California Health and Human Services Dr. Mark Ghaly. "We know how critical it is for planning at the local level for all Californians to feel confident about the trends and where we're heading."Counties across the state felt the impact of the data inaccuracies. Local leaders use numbers and science to guide decision-making.But are counties having any issues with the numbers at the local level? In Kern County, public health officials were asked at the end of July if they're 100% sure no one is getting double-counted for positive COVID-19 tests."That answer would be no…we do get cases that we hear that their addresses are mismatched, they've been counted in another county, they were tested and are in another county, and we are still waiting for that information to flow through so I'm not comfortable saying that we're 100% sure that we aren't duplicating any cases," Kern County Public Health Department Lead Epidemiologist Kim Hernandez said.Public health said less than 18.4 cases were reported inaccurately.Kern County Chief Administrative Officer Ryan Alsop told 23ABC News, "The data and duplication that you are asking about is not a reason we are on the state’s monitoring list."With questions about accuracy at the state level and those raised in Kern County, reporter Adam Racusin asked officials in San Diego and San Luis Obispo counties how confident they are in the daily numbers they report to the public."I'm quite confident our numbers are accurate," said San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. "We have web CMR, and our tests are not all phoned through CalREDIE system. Our test results are reported directly to the county. The only issue which you already know about is the glitch with Quest."A spokesperson for San Luis Obispo County said they are confident in the number of positive cases reported.A spokesperson for the county said, "When it comes to duplicates, they regularly run data queries on positive case results to search for duplicates. On occasion duplicates have been detected and counts adjusted appropriately."The spokesperson also noted, "With regard to the total number of tests (positive and negative), some individuals may receive multiple tests over time. We do not classify those as duplicates but rather they are counted as distinct testing events. That is to say, if one is tested five times, that will show with five distinct test results. All that said, some locations/labs are not reporting ALL their test results (both negative and positive) through our reporting system. Some are only reporting positive tests. So, there may be some under-reporting of negative tests. Consequently, we are confident that the number of positive case reports is correct, although the number of negative results (and by extension) the number of total tests run, may be somewhat under reported."The California Department of Public Health did not respond to multiple requests for comment about data accuracy and duplicate counting. 4011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed near I-5 offrampA member of the San Diego Swim Masters team, he also swam in the Antarctic waters and was training for an island-to-island swim in the Galapagos next year. “He was a fanatic about being in shape,” said his brother, Matt. “Every morning he’d get up at 4 am and swim miles or he’d get up and run.” That’s what they believe he was doing the morning of Dec. 2. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The 55-year-old driver of the minivan stopped and has cooperated with investigators. 1244

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins. The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected. He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. "So this just fit with what we do and it was really about just picking the right technology."Click here to learn more about Truvian's Easy Check test. 1834
