People working in the White House should receive the vaccine somewhat later in the program, unless specifically necessary. I have asked that this adjustment be made. I am not scheduled to take the vaccine, but look forward to doing so at the appropriate time. Thank you!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 14, 2020 338

PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- After Larry McNamer received a cease-and-desist letter from San Diego County officials, during the first week purple tier restrictions went into place, he said he will not back down."This is what courts are for. I'll fight it, I will fight it," the owner of Major’s Diner in Pine Valley said.In the letter, county officials noted he could face up to a ,000 fine for every violation under the state's guidelines, which includes not allowing guests inside."It could be ,000. I don't care because I can't afford to pay it, so I couldn't pay it if I had to,” McNamer told ABC 10News.McNamer said it all boils down to survival of this business and what he thinks is right in an uphill battle with the county and the state."They're going to have be a lot more fair about doling this out and understand that we zero cases up here [in Pine Valley],” he said.Even as he continues to serve up hot plates inside, McNamer said nothing changes when it comes to safety measures given by the state. He said guests are sat apart inside and have the option of dining outdoors if they choose.ABC 10News caught up with a couple from Alpine who grabbed a bite to eat Friday morning, not because Major's was the only diner open but they wanted to support him after seeing him on ABC 10News newscasts."We saw they were in trouble and in need of assistance, so we came to support them,” the supporter, Mark, said.ABC 10News asked Mark and his wife if they thought customers supporting restaurants who defy public health orders are contributing to the problem of COVID-19 cases rates surging, as restrictions continue to grow."Show me the data that these are sources of community spread because the data I see doesn't show that,” Mark said.McNamer said he's been receiving postcards and letters from people across the county supporting his choice of staying open to survive."It empowers you, it lets you know you're doing the right thing,” he said. 1967

PIKELOT ISLAND – Like out of a movie, three missing mariners were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific after writing “SOS” in the sand.Authorities in the U.S. and Australia say the three men departed Puluwat Atoll on a 23-foot skiff last Thursday, intending to travel 21 nautical miles to Pulap, Chuuk. However, they never made it to their destination and were reported missing, according to the Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. A rescue mission was then launched.“Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of an overdue skiff last seen in the vicinity of Chuuk and requested our assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaun McRoberts, 506th Air Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron assistant director of operations. “Once notified, we began immediately working a plan to launch crews to locate the missing vessel.”After almost three hours into their mission and flying at about 1,500 feet, rescue crews located the mariners on the tiny, uninhabited island of Pikelot, Yap.“We were toward the end of our search pattern,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Palmeira-Yen. “We turned to avoid some rain showers and that’s when we looked down and saw an island, so we decide to check it out and that’s when we saw SOS and a boat right next to it on the beach. From there we called in the Australian Navy because they had two helicopters nearby that could assist and land on the island.”Early in the morning on Monday, authorities say a small boat crew was launched and rescued the mariners. The sailors told officials that they ran off course while traveling and eventually ran out of gas, according to the Australian Navy. 1643

Our hearts are broken for Carla’s family, friends, and loved ones. We reached out to provide support to them during this unimaginably difficult time. We have also been in contact with Costa Rican and American law enforcement authorities, and we are standing by to support their investigation, as justice must be served quickly. Paying rent is increasingly a struggle for many Americans, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.Workers need to make almost an hour on average to afford a modest 1-bedroom apartment and about an hour for a 2-bedroom, according to a new report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).“So, if it was the case before that millions of low wage workers were struggling to afford their rent, we anticipate that many more will be unable to now and may not be able to hold onto their homes,” said Dan Threet, an NLIHC research analyst. It’s not just a large metro area problem either. In almost every county nationwide, a full-time minimum wage job isn't enough to cover a 1-bedroom apartment. And when it comes to disparities, the numbers tell the story. About 44% of Black Americans and 42% of Latinx are rent burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. That's compared to 26% of white households. It’s an issue that requires massive investments on multiple levels, both short and long term.“I think we've seen a lot of evidence, especially in recent years’ research, that shows how foundational housing is to our health, our children's health, to their education, to their economic opportunities and to our general wellbeing,” said Threet.Emergency rental assistance needs about 0 billion to help people stay in homes now and prevent a wave of evictions.Pre-pandemic, three out of four people who qualified for housing assistance didn't get it.There are several pieces of legislation proposed to address the affordable housing crisis. You can learn about them on NLIHC.org. 1627
