ISTANBUL, Turkey, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's special representative and State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday vowed to boost bilateral ties and increase exchanges of visits by leaders and senior officials.Dai met with Gul on the sidelines of the third summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia (CICA) here. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese have held memorial meetings and other mourning activities recently to remember the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China that killed at least 1,248 people.During a mourning ceremony on Sunday at a Chinese-language school in Christchurch, New Zealand, overseas Chinese nationals and students observed three minutes' silence for the victims and placed candles in the shape of a heart.Participants then made donations to the mudslide-hit areas, saying they were deeply concerned about those affected by the disaster.On the same day, some overseas Chinese and employees of Chinese companies and institutions in Serbia suspended entertainment activities voluntarily to express their condolences for the victims.In Jordan, people from various walks of life and overseas Chinese residing in the country have offered their sympathy and condolences.Overseas Chinese in Cambodia have called the Chinese embassy to express condolences, saying they are ready to donate for the reconstruction of the mudslide-hit region.The death toll from the Aug. 8 massive mudslide in Zhouqu county, northwest China's Gansu province, has risen to 1,248, with 496 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.China is observing a day of national mourning on Sunday, with national flags flying at half mast and all public entertainment activities suspended.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- In effort to enhance its supervisory role, China's top legislature held an inquiry Thursday into the central government's final accounting for 2009, the first-ever inquiry held into a particular matter.On behalf of the State Council, China's Cabinet, several senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, attended the inquiry to answer questions raised by lawmakers at the 15th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature.The lawmakers focused on issues of general public concern such as how to improve the management of central government's budgeting and accounting, deepen the reform of financial and tax systems, and increase spending on social welfare projects.The decision to order inquiries into government work on certain issues of general public concern, which would require the attendance of senior officials of central government departments, was adopted during the annual NPC session in March.Li Fei, vice chairman of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, said the inquiry was a concrete and important step for the NPC Standing Committee to exercise and improve supervision of the government.According to the Law on Oversight, which took effect in 2007, senior officials of central government departments, the Supreme People's court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, if requested, are required to attend legislative meetings to respond to lawmakers' questions over bills or government work reports being reviewed.

XIAMEN, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have come closer to signing a comprehensive economic pact as "substantial progress" has been made in negotiations, the mainland's chief Taiwan affairs official said on Sunday.Speaking at a centerpiece conference of the week-long Straits Forum held in the southeastern city of Xiamen, Director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Wang Yi, said the progress in talks on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a result of joint endeavors and shall be honored by both sides.The two sides discussed the main contents of the pact and items of the goods and services to be included in the "early harvest program" at the third round of expert-level talks in Beijing last week.The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) represented both sides during the negotiations. Two previous talks were held in Beijing and Taipei earlier this year.The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, the pact's initiators said. Its "early harvest program" will cover certain industries to first benefit from tariff reductions.

CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) - At least 47 people have been killed and 45 others remain missing in floods that have hit northeast China's Jilin Province since July 24, Jilin's civil affairs department said Saturday.In addition, about 375,000 people have been evacuated and 25,800 buildings collapsed due to the floods, with economic loss on account of flooding reaching nearly 4 billion yuan (590 million U.S. dollars), the department said in a statement.More heavy rains are expected from Aug. 3 to 4, according to local weather forecast.
