SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are remembering Talk Show Host and Entertainer Regis Philbin after he passed away Friday.Philbin's first television appearance was on the Regis Philbin Show at ABC 10News. Back then we were called KOGO TV."He never forgot where he started in television and that was right here in San Diego and he loved talking about it," Radio Personality and Friend Shotgun Tom Kelly said.Kelly rescued a couple old photos from the newsroom before they were thrown out depicting Regis' time at ABC 10News. One shows a youthful Philbin standing with the news crew in front of two rows of cars and a KOGO TV van.Another shows him at the Regis Philbin Show desk."I came to Channel 10 in 1960 and I think Regis started in 1961." Former Chief Photographer Lee Louis said he was 19-years-old at the time. He said Philbin seemed like a father figure back then, but he later realized Philbin was only 29.His most memorable assignment with Philbin was when Jayne Mansfield came to town. He said they "went to the old Lindbergh Field terminal off Pacific Highway before they even built the new terminal... He interviewed Jane Mansfield and as we talked about earlier, somewhere I have a black and white picture of him interviewing Jane Mansfield."Louis said he didn't realize until he saw Philbin on national television, what an icon he would become.Philbin's success, according to Kelly, was partially due to advice Philbin received from a San Diego Union Tribune Columnist named Don Freeman. Kelly said Philbin had just left the Navy and wanted to work in television. He said Philbin loved reading Freeman's articles and mustered up the courage to go meet him and talk about breaking into the business. Kelly said he gave him this advice, "I think you've got a future, the one thing that's going to make you stand out is be yourself. And that's what Regis was, he was always himself. If you met Regis in person, it would be the same way you saw him on television."That relatable personality drew millions of fans over the years, including Louis."I still enjoyed watching Regis and Kelly Live and 'yeah I knew that guy,' I started with him, or he started with me, I don't know which," Louis said smiling. Kelly said he had the privilege of hosting a Hollywood Media Professionals luncheon last year honoring Philbin's career. He wanted to surprise Philbin and brought out his first photographer. "Regis was overjoyed, it was just wonderful. I mean it was just a great surprise to pull that on a celebrity."Kelly said he would be missed."At least he didn't die of the virus [coronavirus]. It sounds like he went naturally. It sounds like he was home, I'm sure his family was around him. I don't want to think about that as much as the few good memories I had back in the 60s when we worked together." Louis said. 2826

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center. For a list of locations, call 22 or visit the San Diego Immunization Program website. 1129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Officials gathered to brief the community about a potential pandemic of the Coronavirus locally. Currently, there are no community-spread cases of the virus in the County. However, officials are asking the community to prepare for the event. They are also urging citizens not to panic.Empty shelves line many big-box stores, as San Diegans fear a potential widespread Coronavirus pandemic, which would trap them in their homes for weeks at a time. But county officials said there is no need for hysteria."There is not a reason to panic, but we want people to be vigilant," Gary Cox, Chairman of the San Diego County Supervisors, said.RELATED: California declares state of emergency after 1st coronavirus death"There is a needle to be thread frankly speaking, between adequate preparation versus reactive, inappropriate response," San Diego County Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nick Yphantides, said. This does not mean for every San Diegan to run to the store and buy everything. While County Officials say community spread of the deadly virus is only a matter of time, extra supplies are something we should all have anyway, whether it is for an earthquake, fire, or Coronavirus."Have two, three, up to four weeks of supplies including food, beverages, water, any medications that you might need, as well as materials for your pets," San Diego County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten said.RELATED: Some stores see empty shelves amid coronavirus concernsLast week, the County health laboratory was stocked with 600 Coronavirus test kids. Now they are down to about 400. But with the possibility of a spread, new kits will be delivered to their lab by Friday."There is no commercial test available as of yet," Dr. Wooten said. "But that is on the fast track so that other entities like hospitals or urgent care centers can also test."The County is now encouraging employers to keep sick workers at home, clean workstations, and be flexible with schedules and sick-leave policies.RELATED: WHO says coronavirus is deadlier than seasonal flu"Cross-train personnel to perform essential functions, minimize close contact with employees and the public, or what has been called social distancing," Jaymie Bradford, Executive Vice President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce, said.If the disease spreads, they also have protocols with area schools."Our charge under state law is to stay open as long as our sites remain safe for students and staff. And we will honor that obligation until it is unsafe to do so," San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Paul Gothold, said.If a person in San Diego test positive for Coronavirus, the County says military bases will no longer be used as Quarantine Centers. MCAS Miramar was only used temporarily for repatriated citizens who were overseas. New cases will be logged at hospitals, tested at the County lab, and quarantined at the patient's home."Individuals who become formal Persons Under investigation, our anticipation would be for those individuals to quarantine themselves at home," Dr. Yphantides, said.County Health officials reiterated that the best way to protect yourself is to continue good hygiene. They are discouraging people from shaking hands and giving high-fives. Instead, to give elbow-bumps. 3306
