SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Web exploit toolkits, or " packaged" attack frameworks that can be traded online, are rapidly growing as the top cybercrime weapon due to ease of use and high success rate, a new report has found."When it comes to conducting online crime, exploit toolkits are the weapon of choice for many cyber criminals," said the "2010 Top Cyber Security Risks Report" published by Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) on Monday.The trend started in 2006 with the release of WebAttacker, considered by many to be the first modern day web exploit toolkit, according to the report.An emerging trend ensued and soon took off, and today the Internet is subjected to hundreds of exploits originating from these toolkits."With the ever-increasing, web-based criminal activity, the number of exploit toolkits has skyrocketed and shows no signs of slowing down," the report stated.Though protecting against attacks originated with web exploit toolkits is becoming increasingly difficult, there are ways to minimize the risk of infection, said the report, noting that one of the most effective defenses is to install patches onto host systems.The report also found that while the number of attacks against known vulnerabilities continues to rise, the number of discovered vulnerabilities has plateaued in 2010."We've discovered that rather than investing resources to uncover new exploits, attackers are focused on current, unpatched vulnerabilities in web applications, social networking sites and Web 2.0 interfaces," Mike Dausin, a manager at HP Digital Vaccine Labs, said in a statement.Data from the report showed that nearly half of all reported vulnerabilities exist in web applications, and third-party plug- ins to content management systems have become the leading cause of web application vulnerabilities.

LOS ANGELES, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The United States could soon be faced with an epidemic of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ( NAFLD), one of the major contributing factors of chronic liver disease (CLD), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) reported Saturday.If the current rates of obesity and diabetes continue for another two decades, the prevalence of NAFLD in the U.S. is expected to increase by 50 percent in 2030, AAAS said.The prediction is based on pre-existing clinical survey data over a 10 year period (1988-1994, 1999-2004 and 2005-2008), which included 39,500 adults from three survey cycles, according to the AAAS.Over the three cycles, the prevalence of NAFLD doubled from 5. 51 percent to 11 percent respectively. Furthermore, during the first survey cycle (1988-1994) 46.8 percent of all CLD's was related to NAFLD but by 2005-2008 this had increased to 75.1 percent. In addition, the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, the two key risk factors for NAFLD also steadily increased."If the obesity epidemic is anything to go by, the U.S. NAFLD epidemic may have a ripple effect worldwide," said Mark Thursz, Vice Secretary of the European Association for the Study of the Liver. "It is imperative that health systems continue to drive effective educational programs to reinforce awareness among the general public to alert them of the risks of obesity and promote the importance of diet and exercise."Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is fast becoming one of the top concerns for clinicians due to the obesity epidemic and it's potential to progress to advanced liver disease which significantly impacts on overall liver-related mortality, Thursz said in remarks published by AAAS' website EurekAlert.org.NAFLD, considered as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is the term used to describe fat build-up in liver cells in people who do not drink alcohol excessively. SAN FRANCISCO, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Google on Wednesday introduced a series of notebook computers based on its Chrome operating system, stepping up its competition against Microsoft.Google unveiled the "Chromebook" at its annual developers conference in San Francisco, saying that the new devices, made by Acer and Samsung Electronics, will go on sale on June 15 in the United States and six European countries.Google said Chromebooks can boot in 8 seconds and its security system makes it require no virus protection. Applications, documents and setting will be stored in "the cloud," which enables users to have same experience after logging into another Chromebook. The system will get updated automatically with no update prompts.Acer's Chromebook will start at 349 U.S. dollars and Samsung's product will be priced at 429 dollars for its WiFi model and 499 dollars for 3G connectivity. The devices will be available online in the United States through Amazon.com and Best Buy's online store.Google on Wednesday also announced Chromebooks for Business and Education, a subscription service including Chromebooks and a cloud management console to remotely administer and manage users, devices applications and policies.Google said it will directly handle the business and education orders. HARBIN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A therapeutic apparatus to treat Parkinson's disease has been developed in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, according to the provincial science and technology department. It is a worldwide breakthrough in treating the disease with transcranial magnetic stimulation, concluded an expert panel with the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology.The team said it came to the conclusion after evaluating technical documents and clinical test results Monday.This is the first time that transcranial magnetic stimulation has been adopted to treat Parkinson's disease, said Sun Zuodong, chairman of Aobo Medicine Apparatus Co., Ltd. (AMA), the developer based in the provincial capital Harbin.Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive method which causes depolarization in the brains' neurons so as to restore the functions of brain nerves.The apparatus consists of three parts, namely brain wave stimulator, field effect cap and multiplier, said Sun.Clinical tests over more than 100 patients showed that the apparatus had a 70 percent success rate in reducing the disease's symptoms, according to Wang Aili, planning manager of AMA.The new equipment will help generation of dopamine, the reduction of which within the brain caused the disease, said Wang Weixiang, a consulting doctor with the Heilongjiang Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital.Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the neural system, which leads to limb tremors and difficulty in walking and other movements.China has 2 million patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, mostly people over the age of 50, and the number is increasing by 100,000 annually, said Dr. Wang.
