Celebrities, politicians and professional athletes faced a backlash this week as several revealed that they had been tested for the coronavirus, even when they didn’t have symptoms. That’s fueling a perception that the wealthy and famous have been able to jump to the head of the line to get tested while others have been turned away. But the concerns over preferential treatment underscore a fundamental truth about inequalities baked into the American health care system — those with financial means can often receive a different level of service.Several high-profile athletes tested positive for the virus, including Brooklyn Nets' Kevin Durant. He is among the four Brooklyn Nets who have tested positive for the new coronavirus. A backlash roiled across social media Wednesday, as several celebrities and professional athletes revealed that they had been tested for the coronavirus, even when they didn't have a fever or other tell-tale symptoms. 964
Every year the, FBI releases data detailing "uniform crime reporting" in America. The data compiles reports from thousands of agencies, and indicates trends in criminal activity, and numbers of crimes committed nationwide. While the data indicates the number of criminal reports taken by law enforcement agencies, the FBI said that the data could have pitfalls and give an incomplete picture of crime in America. The FBI said due to a number of factors, comparing jurisdictions is discouraged. Here are some of the factors the FBI lists:Population density and degree of urbanization.Variations in composition of the population, particularly youth concentration.Stability of the population with respect to residents; mobility, commuting patterns, and transient factors.Economic conditions, including median income, poverty level, and job availability.Modes of transportation and highway systems.Cultural factors and educational, recreational, and religious characteristics.Family conditions with respect to divorce and family cohesiveness.Effective strength of law enforcement agencies.Administrative and investigative emphases on law enforcement.Policies of other components of the criminal justice system (i.e., prosecutorial, judicial, correctional, and probational).Citizens’ attitudes toward crime.Crime reporting practices of the citizenry."When providing/using agency-oriented statistics, the FBI cautions and, in fact, strongly discourages, data users against using rankings to evaluate locales or the effectiveness of their law enforcement agencies," the FBI said in a statement. While the FBI discourages comparing crime rates between cities, the FBI said its data can be useful in other ways. "UCR crime statistics are used in many ways and serve many purposes," the FBI said. "They provide law enforcement with data for use in budget formulation, planning, resource allocation, assessment of police operations, etc., to help address the crime problem at various levels."Chambers of commerce and tourism agencies examine these data to see how they impact the particular geographic jurisdictions they represent. Criminal justice researchers study the nature, cause, and movement of crime over time. Legislators draft anti-crime measures using the research findings and recommendations of law enforcement administrators, planners, as well as public and private entities concerned with crime problems. The news media use the crime statistics provided by the UCR Program to inform the public about the state of crime as it compares to the national level."If you would like to see crime data from 2018 for your area, click 2640
Doctors treating a Taiwanese woman for a swollen eye were shocked to find four tiny bees living under her left eyelid. The miniscule insects, known as sweat bees, are 3 to 4 millimeters (0.12-0.16 inches) in length. Doctors at Taiwan's Fooyin University Hospital discovered the bees."I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging things inside," said Hung Chi-ting, the head of the ophthalmology department.Sweat bees, also known as halictidae, "nest near graves and in fallen trees, so it's easy to come across them while hiking in mountains," Hung explained.According to CTS, the woman, identified by her family name of He, said she thinks the insects blew into her eye at a relative's grave site when she visited it with her family. She washed her eyes with water but kept experiencing severe pain."It was very painful. Tears wouldn't stop coming out of my eye," she said. "I was scared to death."After three hours of agony, He visited the hospital, where doctors determined she was suffering from cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and severe corneal erosion caused by the sweat bees."Thankfully she came to the hospital early, otherwise I might have had to take her eyeball out to save her life," Hung said. He's eyesight had been reduced to under 0.1, the equivalent of 20-200 vision on the Snellen eye chart measuring visual acuity, Hung told reporters. "Luckily, she didn't have a high fever and it hadn't affected her central nervous system."Local media reported that He was expected to make a full recovery. The sweat bee feeds off nectar and pollen, but is also drawn to human perspiration, which provides "precious moisture and salts," according to the 1762
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos stood firm on her proposal to cut funds for the Special Olympics on Wednesday, arguing that the organization doesn't need federal backing because it can successfully raise private contributions."The Special Olympics is not a federal program. It's a private organization. I love its work, and I have personally supported its mission. Because of its important work, it is able to raise more than 0 million every year," DeVos said in a statement."There are dozens of worthy nonprofits that support students and adults with disabilities that don't get a dime of federal grant money. But given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations," she added.DeVos, one of the wealthier members of Trump's Cabinet, donated some of her salary last year to the group. Her statement followed an outpouring of criticism over her proposal to cut 12 percent from the department's budget -- the third year in a row she has called for eliminating funding for Special Olympic events at schools.Lawmakers have rejected DeVos' previous proposals, appropriating 1191
