Stores across the country are starting to advertise and display back-to-school sales. From electronics to clothes, the National Retail Federation is tracking buying trends as the new school year approaches."Parents may not know how their children are attending classes, whether it’s in-person or online, a mix, and that is certainly reflected in how people are shopping right now. So, when we did our study in early July most consumers did not know what they needed to buy yet," said Katherine Cullen, the Senior Director for Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation. She says there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the upcoming school year and most consumers are hesitant to buy back to school supplies right now, but many already have plans to spend more."For grade school and high school shoppers it is over 0 on average which is about 0 more than last year. So, some of that is definitely being driven by this current environment and it's shaping how people are planning to buy right now," said Cullen. Cullen says consumers will likely spend more than last year on school supplies and just as much on new clothes. She said there are some things kids need no matter where they learn. "Kids keep growing even if they're not going to school in person, they will likely still need some new items."But the big ticket items families will be spending money on is electronics. "We are certainly seeing that many families, over half, are expecting there will be at least some online learning component and as a result they're planning to make some extra purchases around that: laptops, computers, head phones and speakers are a big component of that," said Cullen.The National Retail Federation says grade school and high school shoppers plan to spend more on average on electronics. Amy Cunningham, a parent in South Carolina, says her family decided to purchase two laptops to help their children with online remote learning this fall. This past spring, the children shared their parents' computers. "Having to juggle the kids’ distance learning with what we were doing was hard so we knew if we were going to do it this year, which was our plan, that we were going to need to get additional laptops," said Cunningham. Cunningham says she likely won't need many other school supplies and doesn't anticipate needing to buy new clothes for the school year."I’d probably get notebooks and stuff like that just because we don’t have a lot of that sitting around. Clothes, no. They live in their play clothes at home now so there’s no point really," says Cunningham.As for how parents will be back-to-school shopping this year, for many, gone are the days of traditional in-store browsing. The National Retail Federation says 40% of families will only be back-to-school shopping online. 2827

(AP) -- Officials say California's popular Squaw Valley Ski Resort will change its name because the word "squaw" is a derogatory term for Native American women.Ron Cohen, president and COO of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadow, says the decision was reached after consulting with Native American groups and extensive research into the etymology and history of the term "squaw."It derived from the Algonquin language, may have once simply meant "woman," but over generations, the word morphed into a misogynist and racist term to disparage indigenous women.The new name is expected to be announced next year.Squaw Valley Ski Resort was the scene of the 1960 Winter Olympics. 692

Steve Wynn will not be getting severance pay following his resignation from Wynn Resorts earlier this month.RELATED: Las Vegas police receive two reports of sexual misconduct by Steve WynnAccording to a document filed Feb. 15 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and signed by new Wynn Resorts CEO Matthew Maddox, Wynn will not receive any other compensation. He also cannot compete against the company for two years.The separation agreement also notes that Wynn must leave his residence at Wynn Las Vegas by June 1 and pay fair market rent until that date. Wynn can terminate the lease before that date. Wnny wll also cease to have administrative support after May 31 and health insurance through the company after Dec. 31, according to the document. Wynn's employment with Wynn Resorts began on Oct. 4, 2002 and ended on Feb. 6, 2018. He resigned following allegations of sexual misconduct. The document also acknowledges that Wynn agrees to cooperate with Wynn Resorts Board of Directors investigation into his time at the company. Talking to a wide range of Black voters Tuesday in South Carolina, the big topic on everyone’s mind is racial tension.“I kind of feel like it’s a lot going on. It’s kind of scary, now that I have kids. So I’m just hoping after today, a little changes,” a voter said.Mika Gadsden says she was born to Jim Crow refugees. She is now a political activist and says she recently asked her father if the racial tension we’re seeing today is similar to what he experienced decades ago. His answer was not what Gadsden expected.“He actually surprised me and said that this is unlike some of things he saw growing up. So I said ‘Pops, you’ve seen the clan in action’ and he said ‘yes, but that was typically under the shadow of night. You didn’t know who, what, when or where’. He feels as though it’s more brazen now,” Gadsden explained.Trudy Grant is a senior consultant for the Conference of National Black Churches. She’s actually been organizing drivers to get people to the polls Tuesday.She says what happened to George Floyd and so many other innocent people of color really impacted the political views of the Black community this election season.“That happened in the front of the world. So it’s not as if we’re making up that there’s police brutality. We don’t have to make it up. You all saw it. And so I think that has made the difference. It has opened the eyes of not only the Black community, but also everyone around the world,” Grant said.A majority of the Black community we spoke to is in favor of a Biden-Harris win. But there is a group of Black conservatives who are rallying behind Trump, like Charleston community leader Johnathan Thrower.“He’s been one of the only Republican presidents that have talked straight to Black America,” Thrower said. “I’d be nervous if Biden becomes president. One of the things I’d be nervous about is how will be handle the economy during COVID. That’s going to be my major concern.” Thrower says he believes limited government and fewer taxes benefits people of color. 2025
