DRESDEN, Germany, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Stanislaw Tillich, premier of the eastern German state of Saxony here on Monday.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, arrived here earlier in the day for an official goodwill visit.Cooperation between localities constitutes an important part of Sino-German ties, Li said. YANGON, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao left Yangon for Beijing on Thursday after concluding a two-day visit to Myanmar, the last leg of his four-nation Asian tour.MEETING MYANMAR COUNTERPARTDuring talks with his Myanmar counterpart U Thein Sein in the capital city of Naypyitaw, Wen and Thein Sein agreed to further promote relations and cooperation between the two countries.Noting that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties, Wen told his host that he came to Myanmar with Chinese people's profound feelings of friendship for the Myanmar people and their strong aspiration for closer bilateral ties.Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (Center L) attends a signing ceremony for 15 documents on cooperation in natural gas, hydropower and other fields, with his Myanmar counterpart U Thein Sein (Center R) in Naypyitaw, Myanmar, on June 3, 2010.During the past 60 years, China and Myanmar have both upheld and followed the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, achieving far-reaching progress in bilateral ties and also creating an exemplar of cooperation between nations with different social institutions, said Wen, the first Chinese premier to visit Myanmar in 16 years.Wen added that China respects the path of development the Myanmar government and people have selected in line with their country's conditions, and appreciates the valuable support Myanmar has long offered on issues concerning China's core interests.Wen stressed that China is ready to join hands with Myanmar to deepen their friendship and expand cooperation, thus remain good neighbors, good friends and good partners for ever.With their land bordering each other and their economies mutually complementary, China and Myanmar have enjoyed a grand prospect of mutually beneficial cooperation, said Wen, while recalling that thanks to their joint efforts, the two countries not only effectively withstood the impact of the global financial crisis but also brought their bilateral trade volume to a new high.In the next phase, Wen said, both sides should make proper planning of key areas and projects for cooperation, speed up the interconnection of the two countries' infrastructure, and complete the agreed major cooperation projects in energy, transportation and other areas in a timely manner and with good quality.The Chinese premier emphasized that China is willing to continue providing assistance to the best of China's ability for Myanmar's economic and social development.For his part, Thein Sein said that Myanmar and China share common borders and the two peoples have long been friendly to each other.Since diplomatic relations were established 60 years ago, the two countries have respected each other, treated each other on an equal footing and in friendly terms on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, he said.He also noted that recent years have witnessed frequent exchanges of high-level visits and significant achievements in trade and other areas of bilateral cooperation.Myanmar appreciates the understanding and support from China and adheres to the one-China policy, the prime minister said.Thein Sein said that Myanmar highly appreciates China's development, places high values on its cooperation with China from a strategic perspective and promptly implements the key cooperation projects the two sides have agreed on.He added that Myanmar will avail itself of the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties to join hands with China to promote their bilateral relations of good-neighborly cooperation to a new high.The two leaders also agreed to make concerted efforts to maintain peace and stability along the common borders between the two countries and turn the borders into a bridge for friendly cooperation between the two countries.Following their talks, the two leaders attended a signing ceremony for 15 documents on cooperation in natural gas, hydropower and other fields.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Monks across China on Wednesday chanted prayers for the victims of the earthquake that struck northwest China's Qinghai Province in April, exactly 49 days after the deaths, which according to Buddhist belief marks the start of the souls' reincarnation. Major temples of the three main schools of Buddhism in China all held prayer rituals for the about 2,700 victims killed in the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Yushu on April 14, a statement from the Buddhist Association of China (BAC) said. About 1,000 Mahayana Buddhist monks attended the prayer session at Beijing's Guangji Temple led by Chuanyin, the BAC president, while the 11th Panchen Lama, the association's vice president, hosted another prayer session at the Lama Temple, an important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Beijing. In southwestern Yunnan Province, monks of Hinayana Buddhism gathered at the Zongfo Temple to pray. Other important temples in Shanxi, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Lhasa also held prayer rituals at the same time. The monks prayed for the victims' souls and for the survivors to overcome the hardships caused by the disaster. Xuecheng, BAC vice president and secretary general, presided over the prayer ritual at the Gyegu Monastery, the main temple in quake-hit Yushu. About 1,000 monks and local residents attended the prayer ritual at the massive cremation site for hundreds of Tibetan quake victims in Gyegu township. Many local residents arrived at the cremation site early in the morning, praying for the dead while turning prayer wheels. Some kowtowed in memory of the dead. "So many eminent monks and living Buddhas attended the prayer ritual and I believe my love is sure to enter the paradise," said Benma, who lost her husband in the quake. "Many good-hearted people have given us support and the monks have been praying day and night," she said. Xuecheng presented to local monks the 2.3 million yuan (338,000 U.S. dollars) raised by the BAC on April 16. According to the State Administration for Religious Affairs, religious circles had donated about 94.52 million yuan (13.72 million dollars) as of Tuesday, of which 70.45 million yuan came from Buddhists.

  

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. Tsui's cinerary casket was covered with a Chinese national flag.Tung Chee-hwa, vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Donald Tsang and Peng Qinghua, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR attended the funeral ceremony.Peng recalled in his memorial speech Tsui's life, his contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and-opening-up drive and modernization as well as China's peaceful re-unification.Hundreds of representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, the HKSAR government, Hong Kong's Legislative Council and other government agencies, as well as Tsui's friends, also attended Tsui's funeral ceremony.
