BRUSSELS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China expected France to take new steps in pushing the European Union (EU) for positive policies toward China, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday.The relations between China and France were of important influence to China's links with the EU, said Wen during a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the sidelines of an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Brussels.China attached great importance to developing ties with France and appreciated France's willingness to enhance cooperation with China, said Wen. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels, Belgium, Oct. 4, 2010. He pledged that France would work with China to jointly advance France-China and EU-China ties.Premier Wen made a five-point proposal on advancing Asia-Europe cooperation when addressing the opening of the ASEM summit.Wen arrived in Brussels for the summit after concluding his visit in Greece earlier in the day. He is also to attend the a China-EU summit in Brussels and then continue his four-nation visit which also will take him to Italy and Turkey.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit of the Republic of Korea (ROK) II SaKong Tuesday in Beijing. BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang said here Monday China would continue to crack down on terrorists and criminals targeting civil aviation.Zhang made the remarks when addressing the opening ceremony of an international conference on air law.The conference will review draft amendments to international conventions on aviation security.Zhang said as a responsible country, China firmly supports international efforts to combat terrorism and will continue to meet its international obligations in the field of civil aviation.Zhang said he hoped delegates could discuss ways to improve international air criminal law.He also expressed hope for the criminalization of unlawful interference that threatens aviation security."We need to send a clear message to the international community and to terrorist groups - any unlawful interfering in civil aviation is intolerable," said Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez, president of the Council for the International Civil Aviation Organization, at the conference.According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), during the twelve-day conference, delegates from over 60 countries will examine international law concerning aviation security, including the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Civil Aviation and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Seizure of Aircraft.

BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. The purpose of the forum is to serve as a platform for leaders, scholars and experts from China and other countries to explore global trends and crucial issues of common interest to mankind in the 21st century.
