This is the cloth mask cleaning recipe recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Either throw the mask in your washing machine using the warm water setting and dry it on high heat. Or hand wash it using one-third cup of bleach per gallon of lukewarm water. Let it sit for five minutes, rinse, then fully air dry.Mike Christman is a respiratory therapy instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College."I've seen people walking about in the stores with visible stains on the mask that tells you A. It hasn't been washed and B. It's probably trapping a lot of bacterial or virus material you probably don't want on the mask," Christman said.Christman knows a thing or two about face masks and the protection they provide. At the start of the pandemic, he was in New York City helping treat COVID-19 patients."What gets on it? What is it besides our own sweat or maybe our own saliva?" Consumer Investigator Kristin Byrne asked Christman."What they are finding is on a lot of the exterior part of the mask, on the outside part of the mask, anything that you are ventilating through that is kind of stuck and contained on that mask. So pollen, dust, dust mites they're finding," Christman continued. The worst-case scenario would be coronavirus. While the CDC recommends you wash your cloth mask regularly, other experts recommend washing them every day.In our TMJ4 News twitter poll, if they wash their cloth masks every day. Out of nearly 600 votes, 27 percent said yes and 73 percent said no.Washing schedule aside, Christman says people need to pay attention to how they're cleaning. He said people need to be conscious of what part of the mask they touch."You want to be careful as you remove the mask in case you did come into contact with someone that is COVID positive that you don't touch the exterior of the mask and then touch your nose and mouth before washing your hands," he explained. So, Christman explained you should only touch the ear loops or mask ties when you remove it from your face for cleaning. And another tip -- if you wash your mask in your washing machine, you can use one of these mesh bags to prevent your mask from getting tangled with other pieces of laundry. Some masks come with care instructions so follow those to get the longest use. This story was first reported by Kristin Byrne at TMJ4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 2369
This week marks Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.6 million Americans face a risk of lead poisoning from lead-based house paint. The CDC says that even low levels of lead in the bloodstream can cause cognitive impairment in children that is irreversible.“As we observe National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we urge people to take action,” said Patrick Breysse, PhD, CIH, Director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health. “Together, we can eliminate childhood lead poisoning as a public health problem by strengthening blood lead testing, reporting, and surveillance, while linking exposed children to recommended services. CDC is committed to help address this threat and improve health outcomes for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our children.”The CDC is encouraging parents to get their children’s lead levels checked by a doctor. The CDC says that the screening is covered for those on Medicaid. While homes older than 42 years old may contain leaded paint, other risks could come from the environment, and exposure to lead-containing products such as antique cookware and leaded crystal glassware. For more information on lead poisoning, click here. 1245

There’s a common anxiety dream that involves walking into a classroom to discover it’s the day of finals and you haven’t cracked a book all semester. Then there’s the waking dream a lot of Americans have — the one where you’re getting ready to retire but haven’t saved enough money to cover expenses if you stop working.Just six in 10 workers report having saved anything — anything — for retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, so a lot of people today may be losing sleep over their future finances.Even those who are making a diligent effort to prepare for their golden years are falling short: Data from workplace plan administrator and fund giant Vanguard shows that just 18% of workers save the 10% or more of income that experts recommend squirreling away for retirement. More than a third are putting away less than 4%. (Unclear where your savings stand? A retirement calculator is a good place to start.)Suspect you’re behind? Here are 13 ways later-in-life savers can address anemic retirement portfolios before it’s too late. 1080
Traveling by plane isn’t always comfortable. Often times it can be cramped, or the temperature isn’t right, or you’re sitting in a noisy area. But if you’re traveling this holiday season, keep in mind there are places to sit on the plane that are more optimal than other seats, says a flight attendant.Best place to sit if you’re always cold:If you hate being cold on a flight, do not sit next to the emergency exit windows. The outside air seeps in the most in those seats. Best place to sit if you hate loud noise:Planes are notoriously loud, but if you need more of a quiet seat, chose one that's away from the kitchen, where the flight attendants work most. Best place to sit if you want a lot of leg room:I think we’re all guilty of propping our feet up on the seat in front of us, because we're cramped. So, if you want a lot of leg room, chose the bulkhead seats, the seats right after the cabin divider or the emergency exit window seats. Best place to sit if you hate turbulence:Turbulence on a flight is never fun, and if you get anxious, sit closer to the front of the plane. That way you won't feel the bumpiness as much as you would in the back. Depending on the flight experience you're looking for, a great website to check out before booking your next flight is called Seat Guru, where you can browse seat maps to over 1,100 aircrafts. 1405
This undated image released by the Alabama Department of Archives and History shows Alabama's 1901 Constitution, which was intended to maintain white supremacy in the state. With the nation focused on racial justice because of the police killings of George Floyd and other Black people, state voters are being asked to remove racist phrases from the document once and for all. While no organized opposition has emerged, some worry that a conservative backlash against protests over racial injustice could harm the chances for passage.
