SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Many Americans say cell phone are their lifelines. But what happens when yours breaks? Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) San Diego real estate icon Doug Manchester lost his nomination to be the ambassador to the Bahamas after a series of emails that may have implied pay for play proposition, according to a new report.The report, from CBS News, uncovered an email exchange between Manchester and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. The exchange came just days after Manchester returned from a humanitarian trip to the Bahamas to provide post Hurricane Dorian aid. President Trump nominated Manchester to the ambassadorship in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -San Diego is expecting the most powerful Santa Ana winds of the season this week. The winds are expected to pick up late Tuesday into Thursday. Cal Fire is urging residents not to let their guard down, but cautions, this is not the time to start clearing defensible space. "This week we really want people to tap the brakes on going out and clearing their property, we don't want them to start the next fire trying to do the right thing, the wrong way, at the wrong time, so please don't clear your property this week, focus on having an evacuation plan so you can get your family members, pets and livestock out when the need arises," said Captain Thomas Shoots, Public Information Officer for Cal Fire San Diego.RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsFirefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, and Cal Fire are helping to fight the fires in Sonoma County and the Getty Fire in Los Angeles. Still, Shoots said there is no strain on local resources. "We know that a lot of times, this time of year, we'll have multiple major events happen at the same time, so we can send out plenty of resources and still be staffed up in San Diego so we are watching that very closely and we want to make sure that if anything takes off here we have plenty of resources to draw from," said Captain Shoots. Crews are able to monitor all the fire activity across the state from the command center at the Cal Fire Headquarters in Rancho San Diego. "Regionally, we're looking pretty good, we're fortunate that both fires that we had on Friday we were able to jump on it, put a ton of resources on it, and we were able to stop those before they became major incidents," said Captain Shoots. According to Shoots, this has been a mild fire season compared to last year. "We continue to see fires this year, but most people haven't heard about a lot of the fires that we've had because we've been able to keep them small. With Cal Fire, our goal is to keep 95% of the fires at 10 acres or less, and we've been fortunate with that this year because the conditions have been milder," said Shoots. Right now, Cal Fire crews are working seven-day shifts, instead of the standard three."We've been pretty lucky with the fire activity around the state has been pretty light. Most other years, we've been hit pretty hard, and we start to get worn down this time of year, but 2019 has been relatively good to us. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A bill requiring California prosecutors to erase or reduce tens of thousands of marijuana criminal convictions was approved by the state Legislature on Wednesday and now awaits Gov. Jerry Brown's signature.When voters passed Proposition 64 in 2016 to allow adult use of marijuana, they also eliminated several pot-related crimes. The proposition also applied retroactively to pot convictions, but provided no mechanism or guidance on how those eligible could erase their convictions or have felonies reduced to misdemeanors.The Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would make that happen.RELATED: What to know about 2018's new marijuana laws in CaliforniaThe bill orders the state Department of Justice to identify eligible cases between 1975 and 2016 and send the results to the appropriate prosecutor.The state DOJ estimates that almost 220,000 cases are eligible for erasure or reduction.
