Government watchdogs say President Trump’s Fourth of July gala in the nation’s capital last year cost taxpayers more than million, twice as much as previous celebrations. Each year, the nation's capital hosts Independence Day celebrations; a parade, concert, fireworks and, in 2019, "A Salute to America." Trump’s desire to have Department of Defense military vehicles participate last year helped drive up the cost, according to the Government Accountability Office. The president’s attendance also increased expenses. The report says that some other costs, such as for military flyovers of the National Mall, aren't included in the estimate. Trump’s military-focused Independence Day event went beyond the traditional concert and fireworks of years past. The GAO estimated that holiday celebrations from 2016 to 2018 cost from million to million annually. 875

Hours after he returned to rhetoric equating violence from white supremacists with those protesting them, the White House said Thursday that President Donald Trump signed a resolution condemning white supremacy. In the White House statement, Trump said he opposed bigotry in all forms."No matter the color of our skin or our ethnic heritage, we all live under the same laws, we all salute the same great flag, and we are all made by the same almighty God," Trump said.Congress?passed the resolution earlier this week, pushing Trump to put his signature on something expressly singling out white supremacy for condemnation. The White House said in response to the resolution's passage that Trump would "absolutely" sign it, and looked forward to the opportunity. 783

Hospital nurses near Philadelphia went on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, airing a grievance over working conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, the nurses’ union said they were told they will now be locked out of their jobs through the end of the week. The 800 nurses are employed at the suburban St. Mary’s Medical Center. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“We tell Trinity we need more nurses, in large part because, as Trinity has acknowledged, we’re 15 years behind in wages, and they tell us they can’t afford to pay us a competitive wage,” says Jim Gentile, R.N., a surgical services nurse who has been at St. Mary for more than 35 years. “If they can’t find the money to recruit and retain more nurses, did they magically find several million dollars in the back of a drawer to pay the agency nurses?”Hospitals in the Philadelphia area previously told the Philadelphia Inquirer that they would hire replacement nurses to work if the union goes on strike."We respect the union members’ right to strike, and we remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach agreement on a fair, consistent and sustainable initial contract for St. Mary nurses. We look forward to the day productive negotiations can resume," said a statement from Trinity Health. 1369

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Grand Rapids teen is making sure your morning cup of coffee stays brewing for years to come with the launch of her new coffee line, Joven Coffee."Joven means 'young' in Spanish, so that is why we chose it because we're supporting young farmers," said Frankie Volekma, founder of Joven Coffee. At 14, Frankie is the youngest coffee Q grader in the world and is launching the coffee line to support the next generation of coffee farmers."We're just trying to make it a viable career option for a lot of these young farmers because a lot of times it's a low paying career to be in coffee farming," she said.In coffee producing countries like Columbia and regions of Africa, farmers are primarily 57 years old or older.Frankie's concern is those farmers will eventually retire, and there won't be enough young farmers to take their place."I think it's an important issue, and you're going to hear more about it over time," said Frankie's dad, Tim Volekma, owner of Sparrow Coffee and Schuil Coffee. "I feel like maybe we're one of the first people to sort of bringing it to bring light to this issue."As a young professional in the coffee industry, Frankie says she feels it is her calling to use her talents to support young farmers who may not have the same opportunities she does. She teamed up with young farmers in Columbia and a group of women farmers in Burundi in Africa and created two single-origin varieties under the Joven Coffee name."It's really cool for me to be able to be a part of something that is making an impact on the world," she said, "and even if it just helps a couple of farmers, that really makes me feel great about myself, and that I'm making a difference."Learn more about Joven CoffeeThis story was first reported by Savannah Fish at WXMI in Michigan. 1810

Getting interrupted by a telemarketing call or a robocall is annoying. Plus, when there is one robo call, another is sure to follow minutes later.  Whether it’s your landline or your cellphone, the Nomorobo service claims it has stopped more than 670 million robocalls and counting.Mary Lee Chin is a believer.  She uses Nomorobo because she used to get nervous when she received robo calls at night, assuming something had happened to her kids. She was already on the "Do Not Call" list, but it wasn’t screening all telemarketing calls. So, she decided to sign up for Nomorobo. The FTC recognized Nomorobo as the winner of its robo challenge, a competition to find new ways to fight back against these annoying calls.Nomorobo weeds out the telemarketer scams, but allows school closings, doctor's office reminders, prescription pickups and weather warning calls to still come through. "It is wonderful, wonderful technological application to free your life up from really annoying calls," said Chin. It’s easy to sign up for the service. You can create an account by downloading the app on your computer or smartphone. You then type in your number and you're good to go. Just know if you don’t like the service, you can turn it off anytime you want. If you have a landline it is free and for cellphones it’s .99 a month.  1380
