In a sea of graduation caps, how do you stand out? Increasingly, students are decorating their caps to showcase some part of their life.UNLV professor and folklorist Sheila Bock began studying trends behind graduation caps after she first arrived in Las Vegas in 2011. She began formally researching in 2015, taking photos from around the country and interviewing students on their graduation cap design choices."So one category is one of celebration and optimism and looking into the future, 'I did this', 'the best is yet to come', which isn't that surprising because that's kinda the whole point of the graduation ceremony," Bock said.Some examples include "Today is a perfect day to start living your dreams" or "Adventure is out there." While Bock said many celebrate "education as this stepping stone towards people's own individualized version of pursuing the American Dream," she also found a lot of examples of people pushing back against that story, rather by "Game of Loans" referencing college loan debt or highlighting the less positive aspects of their college experience. "Family relationships, whether they have kids, whether they have been dealing with a brain tumor, this is a space where students or graduates are really trying to highlight 'I did this' and here are the struggles I had to go through in order to get to this moment," Bock said, also noting that some students use the caps as a memorial to family and friends they've lost. But one thing she has noticed in the past few years is the caps have started to take more of a lean toward the political. Bock noted that there has been a long tradition of political themes, dating back to the 1960s and caps decorated with peace signs in reference to the Vietnam War. "It's not to say people weren't doing it before but I'm seeing it happen as a more widespread practice. People are asserting overtly political messages, like Black Lives Matter," she said. "Or making references to language from the political landscape, 'nevertheless she persisted.' Or calling attention to specific identities that have recently become very politicized, immigrant identities."Hashtags on social media, such as #Immigrad and #Latinxgrad, also inspire others of similar identities to create their own caps, Bock said."They want to use this space of the graduation ceremony, this space of celebration, this space to recognize accomplishment, to make themselves visible," she said. "To make these marginalized identities visible and say I'm in this space, I belong in this space and I want to make myself known."But what about students who decide not to decorate their caps? "The main reason is that people feel this sense of formality to the ceremony that they would like to keep intact," Bock said. "Oftentimes, it's not necessarily that they see other people decorating their cap that they're doing something wrong. They're saying I don't have something to say badly enough to put it on a cap and kind of disrupt the formality of the occasion."The majority of the caps Bock and her student assistants have documented so far are from UNLV, along with some from Ohio State University, where Bock received her graduate degrees. If you're a night owl, you may want to consider spending your winters in northern Alaska.Utqiagvik, Alaska, formerly known as Barrow, experienced its last sunrise and sunset on Sunday for about two months.The town of about 4,000 people is now beginning its 65-day period of darkness, known as polar night.Polar night is a common term in places that don't experience sunrise for more than 24 hours, according to CNN meteorologist Judson Jones."This happens every year," Jones said. "If you live above the Arctic Circle, there will be a day when the sun sets for the rest of winter. The good news? It will return and then during the summer when it won't set for days."The northern third of Alaska lies above the Arctic Circle, the ring of latitude that encircles the frigid Arctic polar region.Although Utqiagvik is not the only Alaskan town to experience this phenomenon, it is the first one on the polar night location list because of how far north it is.For about one to two months, the residents of Kaktovik, Point Hope and Anaktuvuk Pass will also be without the sun. Their final sunsets will happen between late November and early December, according to CNN affiliate KTUU.The sun officially set at 1:43 p.m. Sunday in Utqiagvik, starting its 65-day hiatus from the town. In a security policy that has been implemented in many stadiums and arenas around the country, large bags will soon be banned inside Cinemark's movie theaters, the company has announced. The ban will go into effect on Thursday at all of its theaters. Cinemark is the parent company of chains such as Rave Motion Pictures, Century Theatres, CineArts and Tinseltown. Bags larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches will not be permitted. Exceptions may be made for medical equipment and diaper bags. Cinemark said there will not be anywhere to check bags. The chain also said that the company reserves the right to inspect all bags entering its theaters. A Century Theatre, which is owned by Cinemark, was the scene of a mass shooting in July 2012, when 12 were killed and 58 were wounded by a gunman. Survivors and families of the victims sued Cinemark claiming the company did not take adequate safety and security precaution.
