One family is going beyond the talk, and developing a plan we can all learn from.Snack time at the Wardell house is more than a time to eat. And while these topics may be light ones, conversations on heavier topics don't look much different.  Wardell says she started talking with her teenage children, Brandon and Elissa, about drugs and alcohol when they were young. She says she's honest with them about the reality of drugs and alcohol, and pushes them to think about how they might react if around them. And if there's a situation her kids can't get themselves out of, the Wardell's have developed a plan for that.  "We have a little code word they can text or a call," Karla Wardell says. "And if they text and they write something like what time do you want me home but if home is all capitalized that is their SOS to me like I want to come home."  Elissa Wardell has had to send her mom a text like that, and even uses a way to delete it to be even more discreet.  "Your friends won't be able to see that you have said I want to go home," Elissa Wardell says. "They will just think that your parents are being mean and you can go home."  Steve Martinez works with Speak Now, a campaign that encourages parents to have conversations with young ones about the dangers of substance use.  "If a parent feels that it is wrong for example to binge drink or use substances, that teens are three times less likely to use," Martinez says.  Martinez says conversations can happen anywhere, and can start when a child is as young as nine. SYLMAR, California — A freeway sign indicating drivers were using Interstate 5 South fell into traffic lanes Friday afternoon at the start of the holiday travel rush in Sylmar, north of Los Angeles.A driver reported to the California Highway Patrol that most of the sign fell into the middle lanes of I-5 at SR-14 at 1:15 p.m. Some parts of the sign were left dangling from the rigging.At least one driver hit some of the debris, according to the CHP’s online report. There were no reports of any injuries.Officers shut down south I-5 and diverted traffic into truck lanes, backing up the freeway into Santa Clarita.Caltrans crews removed the dangling sign and traffic on south I-5 was reopened about 3:30 p.m.The cause of the fall is under investigation. 773

Scientists will now use tracking devices and cameras to monitor how the animals do and whether they can be released into a wild environment eventually.The project is being called #DevilComeback.Tasmanian Devils were once found in Australia, but are now only found in the wild on the island of Tasmania.According to the preservation group Aussie Ark, the animals went extinct in Australia about 3,000 years ago due to being hunted by the Dingo. There are no Dingos in Tasmania, and the Tasmanian Devil is the island’s top predator.However, in 1996, scientists detected an infectious cancer affecting the Tasmanian Devil population. Roughly 90 percent of the population has died as the disease spread rapidly, according to Aussie Ark.Since then, Aussie Ark has created a breeding center for the animals. The 30 animals being released in the latest project came from this center.Tasmanian Devils prefer open forests and woodlands, and are more scavengers than hunters.
