The Navy’s newest, most high-tech nuclear submarines use at least one piece of technology that millions of children use every day — a video game controller.According to The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia, the Navy is replacing traditional periscopes on its Virginia-class nuclear submarines with high resolution cameras that will be controlled with Xbox 360 controllers.According to the Virginian-Pilot, the cameras were originally designed to be controlled with a “helicopter-style” joystick. That design was quickly dropped after officials got feedback from a group of Navy junior officers.Lt. j.g. Kyle Leonard, the assistant weapons officer on the USS John Warner — one of the Virginia-class submarines based in Norfolk — told the Virginian-Pilot that many sailors found the joystick clunky to hold and hard to use.The solution? Integrate a tool that nearly every American kid uses on a daily basis.According to WRC-TV, the controllers are more than just functional. The jarring noises and machines inside the Usheco plastics warehouse sound like home to the Schaeffer family.“My grandfather, Bernarr Schaeffer, started the business in ’61. So, proud to be third generation,” said Alethea Shuman, who will one day take over the company for her father.The company started with the World War II fighter pilot, and now, more than 60 years later, nearly every member of his family has worked inside these four walls.“It’s like having your own team. There’s an extra level of trust that you just don’t get elsewhere,” said Wayne Schaeffer, Bernarr’s son and the President of Usheco.They build all kinds of plastic devices. The company is known for air purifying planters, handicapped equipment, and laboratory supplies.“Our business was really founded on my grandfather wanting to make health-related products,” said Shuman. Now, this family is seeing a huge boom in some new products.At the start of the pandemic when everything shut down, Usheco had to lay off much of their staff because business dropped by about 40 percent. However, they designed face shields and desk barriers and had to bring everyone back on and hire extra workers on just to fulfill all their orders.“We only cut everyone’s hours for one week," said Shuman. "The following week, we were back to full-time hours for everyone."Hundreds of thousands of face shields and plastic desk barriers in custom shapes and sizes are coming out of this factory.While most businesses are in need of help themselves, the plastics industry is one of few seeing pandemic profits.“Things are looking pretty good for us,” said Schaeffer. “How can you not be thrilled to be helping out and making your business grow?”The Schaeffers say their U.S. made products are growing to a global scale. “Our pricing is similar to China now,” said Wayne.“We’re seeing new quotes coming in for things that are typically done overseas and were grateful to be able to help with that,” said Shuman.Shuman said by the time she takes over the business, she hopes the products keeping her grandfather’s legacy alive are no longer in stock.“I’m hoping we figure out a way to get past this and we’re not going to need PPE and sneeze guards, and the business coming back to the U.S. is going to support us. And from what I can see, that’s happening,” she said.But more important than business, is carrying on a tradition.“Over the last few months, we really have understood where our roots are and where we’re going,” she said.Towards a future where simple, plastic products mean more than ever before. 2571

The mother of a Florida child who was punched in the face by an adult is wondering why the man was not arrested. “He was screaming at us, cursing at us, calling us the 'n-word' and he came down to the middle of his yard, and I was like 'who are you talking too,' and he said 'come within arm's reach and I'll show you who I'm talking to,'" said Malikai Villatte, the 12-year-old boy who was punched.  A picture of Malikai after the incident showed his two front teeth were knocked out. The young boy also received stitches to heal a gash on his mouth. “When I realized my teeth were dangling in my mouth it was kind of shocking, I didn't know what was going on," Malikai said. “It was like a nightmare, I just knew I had to get there and I had to get there fast," said Malikai's mother Brittany Graham. His parents are upset because the man who punched Malikai was not arrested. Lataevion Graham, 13, says he witnessed the incident and claims Cerfalo spat on them after punching Malikai. Graham's father says he wants justice for the children. “Where it is okay for an adult to take the law into their own hands, and to strike a kid hard enough to knock out his teeth. Where is that acceptable, in what country is that acceptable?" said Larry Graham. According to a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the man who punched Malikai was 27-year-old Vincent Cerfalo.“Originally this is where the altercation took place, right here," Cerfalo said.“I told them to back off and if they come on my property I'm going to defend myself. They said, 'you won't hit us, you won't hit us,' and they started to surround me," said Cerfalo. He says it all started when he yelled at the kids to get out of the road because they were blocking traffic.A cellphone video captured the moments after Malikai was punched. Cerfalo claims he was acting in self defense.“He touched me and I lifted my hand out, and I ended up hitting him. It was not my intention to hit anybody that hard, it was not my intention to knock teeth out or do harm, or cause any kind of trouble,” Cerfalo said.The children say no one touched Cerfalo at any time during the incident. Cerfalo says he never expected things to escalate to violence. He now plans to press charges against 12-year-old Malikai for assault, which the child’s parents can’t understand. “He's not going to jail, nothing is happening to him and he's basically getting away with it right now," Malikai said.“I want the man in jail," said Brittany Graham.  The case has been sent to the state attorney’s office, which will determine if a summons will be issued to Malikai for assault.  2750

The Justice Department responded to CNN's lawsuit over the revocation of Jim Acosta's press pass on Wednesday, saying in a court filing that the White House rejects the idea that it can't pick and choose which journalists can be given a permanent pass to cover it."The President and White House possess the same broad discretion to regulate access to the White House for journalists (and other members of the public) that they possess to select which journalists receive interviews, or which journalists they acknowledge at press conferences," lawyers say in the filing.Both CNN and Acosta are plaintiffs. The suit alleges that their First and Fifth Amendment rights are being violated by the ban.Judge Timothy J.
