is safe thanks to Good Samaritans at a gas station in Cambria, California. A group of civilians confronted the suspect, 24-year-old Victor Magana, after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and took off from San Jose with their daughter. Al Ashcroft, a man visiting the Central Coast from Oregon, recognized the suspect's vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, from the alert Monday morning at a Shell gas station. While he blocked the car in and called police, nearby men helped restrain the driver. "Four of us surrounded him and said, 'You're not leaving,'" Ashcroft said. Deputies say Magana locked his keys inside the car with the child while making a pit stop in Cambria. "He hit the window twice to try and break in and finally a guy bear hugged him from behind and I took the rock away," Ashcroft said. Witnesses say Magana bought snacks at the store and tried to break into his car to feed his daughter. "He kept screaming that he wasn't that guy, that it wasn't him and that his daughter hadn't eaten in six hours," said Tammy Hall. The little girl was strapped in the front seat the whole time civilians were attempting to restrain the father. Many are praising the people who stepped up to save her. "I am amazed that these men were able to hold him here and stop him from taking off. They were very brave. Heroes," Hall said. Both Magana and the girl are in custody. Magana will eventually be transferred back to Santa Clara County, according to authorities. According to NBC Bay Area, Magana's girlfriend suffered at least one stab wound. She was taken to a hospital where she remains in critical but stable condition. This article was written by Megan Healy for 1674

You hear about mass shootings happening across the nation, but what you rarely hear about are the ones that didn’t happen.About 2 years ago, one Colorado high school was the location for a potential mass shooting.“There are more interventions then there are mass shootings," said Kevin Klein, director of the Colorado Division of Homeland Security. In the last year, the FBI reports 150 mass shootings did not happen because of threat assessment and prevention."That doesn’t include what happens on a day-to-day basis in local law enforcement, mental health community or social services," Klein said.Homeland Security reports that in 81 percent of mass shooting cases, the offender told somebody about their plan. In 59 percent of the cases, the shooter told more than one person about their plan to kill.About 8 miles away from the school where a potential shooting was going to take place is a school America knows all too well, Columbine High School. After the shooting at Columbine, local law enforcement created a program called text a tip. That program is the same program that prevented the other Colorado school from having a mass shooting.  Dr. Russell Palarea is the president of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. He says the public’s tips are everything. They are essential to preventing bad things from happening.'If you have a concern, say something," Palarea said.ATAP designs programs to help potential offenders find positive outlets in society and help them change their violent thinking. The program includes getting the offender counseling, helping them take part in community service, having friends and families do weekly check-ins and working with a school tutor weekly.“It’s an ongoing continuous process," Palarea said. "It’s not a one shot deal. We need to continually work with these folks to find pro-social ways to manage their stress and resolve their problems."Otherwise, some folks will revert back to their violent tendencies and ultimately commit attacks.” 2052

WOLFE CITY, Texas – A white police officer has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Black man following a reported disturbance at a convenience store in a small East Texas town. The Texas Rangers say Jonathan Price was walking away from Wolfe City Police Officer Shaun Lucas Saturday night when Lucas deployed his Taser and then opened fire with his service weapon, killing Price.“The preliminary investigation indicates that the actions of Officer Lucas were not objectively reasonable and, therefore, not justifiable force,” the Texas Rangers said in a statement. The 22-year-old police officer was booked Monday into the Hunt County Jail. Bail is set at million. It's unclear if Lucas has a lawyer who can comment on his behalf.Family and friends of the 31-year-old Price say he was intervening in a domestic disturbance when he was shot. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting, with the cooperation of the Wolfe City Police Department and the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office. 1035
