Members of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins were visibly shaken Wednesday after a foul ball injured a child during a game at Yankee Stadium.In the fifth inning of Wednesday's game, Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier hit a foul ball on the third base side that struck a young girl. ESPN didn't replay the incident, but Frazier and members of both teams appeared upset afterward.A nearby fan can be seen immediately signaling for help after the play. Many of us like to enjoy an ice-cold soda, but have you wondered what might be lurking on the soda dispensers, from the older ones to the new machines with one central nozzle?Scripps reporters took swabs from five types of locations: a movie theater, a fast food restaurant, a fast casual restaurant, a gas station and a hospital cafeteria to see just how clean or dirty some soda fountains are.The swabs were sent to a food safety lab.Dr. Helene Ver Ecke, a microbiologist at Metropolitan State University of Denver, studied the results. "So it is concerning that that particular species was found to be prevalent," said Ver Ecke as she looked over the results. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Sunday evening measures to try and slow the growing spread of COVID-19 in her state.In a press conference Sunday evening, Whitmer and state health officials announced a "Three-Week Pause" aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus.Between Nov. 18 and Dec. 8, the state will mandate that the following operations be closed:In-person learning at high schools, colleges and universitiesTheaters, stadiums and arenasAll who are able to work from home will be required to do soDine-in restaurants and barsOrganized sports, except professional sportsBowling centers, ice skating, indoor water parksBingo halls, casinos, arcadesGroup fitness classesSeveral businesses will remain open, according to the state, including:Hair salons, barbershops and other "personal services"Gyms and pools for individual exerciseRetail storesPreschool through 8th gradeChildcarePublic transitManufacturing, construction, other work that is impossible to do remotelyThe state is also putting restrictions on private gatherings — indoor gatherings are limited to two households and 10 people, and outdoor gatherings are limited to 25 people.“In the spring, we listened to public health experts, stomped the curve, and saved thousands of lives together. Now, we must channel that same energy and join forces again to protect our families, frontline workers and small businesses,” Whitmer said in a release. “Right now, there are thousands of cases a day and hundreds of deaths a week in Michigan, and the number is growing. If we don’t act now, thousands more will die, and our hospitals will continue to be overwhelmed. We can get through this together by listening to health experts once again and taking action right now to slow the spread of this deadly virus."“Indoor gatherings are the greatest source of spread, and sharply limiting them is our focus,” said MDHHS Director Robert Gordon. “The order is targeted and temporary, but a terrible loss of life will be forever unless we act. On Saturday, the state reported 7,072 new positive virus cases and 65 more deaths. On Friday, the state reached its highest single-day record to date with 8,516 new coronavirus cases reported.In the last five days, between Nov. 9 and 13, there were 35,009 cases of COVID-19 and the daily record was broken three times.More than one-fourth — about 27% — of the total cases since the pandemic began have come since the beginning of November.In one month, from Oct. 13 to Nov. 13, hospitalizations in Michigan increased 232%. Men may have a harder time maintaining friendships during the pandemic.Experts say it’s because social distancing guidelines have forced men out of their normal ways of communicating.“Men tend to construct their friendships on a shoulder-to-shoulder basis and women tend to use a face-to-face basis, so guys will get together and do things, like sports, going to the sports bar, activities,” said University of Maryland Professor Geoffrey Greif, author of the book “Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships.”Greif says it's rare for men to reach out to each other just to talk. Men tend to be more cautious about how much they share.They'll also only ask to do something together so many times before the invitation is returned.“We're just not socialized to feel comfortable. We don't want to seem like we are stalking another guy for a friendship. Men don't want to appear too emotionally needy,” said Greif.There are some activities that we can still do while social distancing.Greif says you can also try getting together over Zoom to watch sports or play a game.Recognize it's not going to be as good as in person, but keep in mind that eventually the pandemic will end. 1186
